What is a monkeybox?

When I was a little girl, we had a pet monkey named Amanda. My Dad worked in the produce business, so each night he brought home that days culls in a big box - spotty cucumbers, pithy apples, limp celery, moldy oranges and the like. We called it a monkeybox. It was really just trash, but my Mom would take each piece of fruit and trim it, pare it and cut it up to make a beautiful fruit platter for Amanda. Even though it was deemed trash by one, it still had life left in it and was good for the purpose we needed it. That's how I live my life - thrifting, yard saling, looking for another's trash to be my treasure.

This morning I picked the first of the garden tomatoes.

A whole bowl full of fresh sun ripened tomatoes!

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.  I can almost taste those Turkey Bacon and Tomato sandwiches.  Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Now I just need to find a teeny tiny loaf of bread.  *Sigh*

Come ooooooooooon BIG Tomatoes.  Hurry UP already!

Have you had an acutal juicy red garden fresh tomato yet?

  1. Are you kidding? No ripe ones yet! Can't wait though. My favorite sandwich, and now my daughter's - is fresh pesto on wheat bread, cheddar cheese and fresh tomatoes -grilled! It's like a grilled cheese or panini, but sooooo awesome!

  5. You got me on that post, Shara. I grew some Heirloom tomatoes this year. Harvested a few but not that many. The small, plum shaped have been the best.
My favorite is toasted Chiabatta bread brushed with good olive oil, havarti cheese, sliced tomatoes, salt and pepper and drizzled with more olive oil. Hmmmmmmm
