What is a monkeybox?

When I was a little girl, we had a pet monkey named Amanda. My Dad worked in the produce business, so each night he brought home that days culls in a big box - spotty cucumbers, pithy apples, limp celery, moldy oranges and the like. We called it a monkeybox. It was really just trash, but my Mom would take each piece of fruit and trim it, pare it and cut it up to make a beautiful fruit platter for Amanda. Even though it was deemed trash by one, it still had life left in it and was good for the purpose we needed it. That's how I live my life - thrifting, yard saling, looking for another's trash to be my treasure.

Ron & Uaucy

I'm a day late, but since yesterday was Ronald Reagan's 100th Birthday, I wanted to share my one Ronald Reagan item that I own.

When I was a Senior in High School, we all got our little boxes of Graduation Announcements one day at lunch.  Everyone had their notebooks out writing down who they were going to send an Announcement.  Grandma, Aunt So and So, Uncle So and So, you get the drift.  Then we started besting each other - Someone said, "I'm going to send one to the MAYOR!"  Ha ha ha!   We all laughed.  Someone else said, "I'm sending one to the Governor!"  Ha ha ha! So, I said, "I'm sending one to the PRESIDENT!"  HA HA HA!  That was a funny one!  Then they dared me to do it.  So, I did.  What the heck, it was just a stamp (which back then was only 20¢!), so I addressed it to the White House and sent it out.  Dare completed.

So, imagine my surprise when a few weeks later, I came home to find this in my mailbox!

And, this inside!

When I took it to school the next day, everyone was dumbfounded that I got a card from the President!  And, they were bummed that they didn't send an Announcement too.  Ha on them!

Since I got this, I still refer to Mrs. Reagan as Uaucy Reagau.  (ya-sooey Rah-gooey).  Weird N's, huh?

Have you ever had any Presidential mail?

*I am fully aware that this was an automated signature and mailed by some underling at the White House.  I know Nancy didn't sit in the bed at night and hand address cards to peon High School kids.

  1. Considering the fact that the President himself would never see a letter from me (since minions respond 99% of the time), no, I've never written the President. But I DO have an invitation to President Obama's inauguration that I very proudly framed. Since it didn't include an RSVP card I'm pretty sure they weren't expecting me, but still . . .

  3. That is awesome! I'd never heard of doing that until after I got married, and I wanted to send an invitation for my sister's wedding to the White House, but she is a democrat and GW was in office, so she told me no! Maybe I'll invite the Obamas to my brother's wedding...

  4. When our children were born, my husband sent an announcement to the President and several governors (VA where we live, NC where he used to live, etc.). So now we have letters from the Prez. and several governors in our children's baby books. They are similar to your letter from Ronny. :-)

  5. My daughter shared the same birthday with Pres. Bush (#2)..she sent him a birthday card every year he was president signed it from "your birthday buddy"..she always received a response. For a small child it was a big thrill!

  6. I had a friend in high school who did the same thing you did--sent an invite to Pres Reagan--and got the same response card. She had hers framed. When the Clintons were in office and Hillary's mother died, I sent a sympathy card and got a nice letter in reply.
