What is a monkeybox?

When I was a little girl, we had a pet monkey named Amanda. My Dad worked in the produce business, so each night he brought home that days culls in a big box - spotty cucumbers, pithy apples, limp celery, moldy oranges and the like. We called it a monkeybox. It was really just trash, but my Mom would take each piece of fruit and trim it, pare it and cut it up to make a beautiful fruit platter for Amanda. Even though it was deemed trash by one, it still had life left in it and was good for the purpose we needed it. That's how I live my life - thrifting, yard saling, looking for another's trash to be my treasure.

That Monkey Cake

I think all of you remember (or maybe even still have nightmares) about my terrible awful horrible monkey cake.

Remember how The Bean requested a cute, Curious George-ish cake for my birthday this year?

How the assumed it might look a lot like this cute Curious George cake? A happy sweet funny cake?

And how horrified we were to discover this in the box?

Ack! That's not Curious George! It is Curious though!

I decided to submit it to Cake Wrecks and it became an instant favorite. In fact, it is listed #1 on the side of the Cake Wrecks Website as a Fan Favorite.

I thought that was the end of the story. But then......The Geek Squad over at Comedy.com found Cake Wrecks and decided to write a jingle for the site. You can skip ahead to 1:27 on the video just to see the Cake Wrecks jingle. They only featured about 20 or so cakes in the video, but my hideous monkey cake made the cut.

Then the creator of Cake Wrecks was a guest blogger at Cupcakes Take the Cake where she featured once again, the monkey cake as a fan favorite.

And, then inexplicably enough - people started Wreckplicas the monkey cake. On purpose!

Holy Moly. It's perfect. If a terrible awful monkey cake can be perfect!
Does the story end here? Let's hope not. Yesterday, I released the photo back to Cake Wrecks for possible inclusion in the Cake Wrecks BOOK! *Cross you fingers!* (I'm just happy my age wasn't on that darn monkey cake!)
