What is a monkeybox?

When I was a little girl, we had a pet monkey named Amanda. My Dad worked in the produce business, so each night he brought home that days culls in a big box - spotty cucumbers, pithy apples, limp celery, moldy oranges and the like. We called it a monkeybox. It was really just trash, but my Mom would take each piece of fruit and trim it, pare it and cut it up to make a beautiful fruit platter for Amanda. Even though it was deemed trash by one, it still had life left in it and was good for the purpose we needed it. That's how I live my life - thrifting, yard saling, looking for another's trash to be my treasure.

I was making breakfast yesterday morning when I noticed the odd array of dishes that I was using. All of these items were purchased at thrifts or yard sales. I just got the cool old 1950's red metal tray at the thrift last week for 50¢. My son's favorite color has always been orange. He found a set of bright orange 1970's metal enameled cups at a yard sale when he was about three. The fish plate is metal too. I paid $4.00 for a large bowl, four plates and four smaller bowls all with the same fish motif. Nearly all of my dishes are metal - they never wear out or break. The only downside is that they can't go in the microwave, but that's why paper plates were invented! As a wedding gift, I received two sets of really heavy duty nice blue specked enamel camping dishes. I have been using them every day for 15 years and they are still as good as new. In the background of the photo you can see one of my other favorite items - a set of metal enameled stove burner covers from an old coal stove. They are white with black speckles and are very heavy. I paid $2.00 for them at the Salvation Army years ago and even bought my new existing white stove with black accents just to match the covers! Now that deal devotion!
