What is a monkeybox?

When I was a little girl, we had a pet monkey named Amanda. My Dad worked in the produce business, so each night he brought home that days culls in a big box - spotty cucumbers, pithy apples, limp celery, moldy oranges and the like. We called it a monkeybox. It was really just trash, but my Mom would take each piece of fruit and trim it, pare it and cut it up to make a beautiful fruit platter for Amanda. Even though it was deemed trash by one, it still had life left in it and was good for the purpose we needed it. That's how I live my life - thrifting, yard saling, looking for another's trash to be my treasure.

A Collection - Alabaster Watermelon Slices

I have this crazy idea that if I start photographing some of my collections that I might start to cull out some of the least favorite items in that collection and maybe even discard the collection all together.  I really don't see me getting rid of any collection in it's entirety, but I do think I can see what isn't perfect for me or the collections and then cull some things out.  That sounds plausible, now don't you think?

Matte White Pottery

The first blog to really feature collections was A Collection A Day where she featured a different collection a day for a year.  All of her collections were visually appealing, but a lot of the collections were things like bread ties, dice and matchboxes.  Neat things, but not really collections in my mind.  But, I loved the blog and was always curious to see what collection would be featured that day.

Chocolate Covered Cherry Boxes

Then I came across The Copycat Collector who also featured one of her many collections a day for an entire year.  Now, her collections were full scale collections - globes, crates, books. circus toys, fruit crate labels, Girl Scout items and on and on and on.  I encourage you to read the entire blog if you haven't already.  She no longer adds to the blog since it was a one year only contribution, but it is still a lovely read full of inspiration.

Collapsible Cups

Of course, if you are looking for inspiration and collections, I KNOW you read Magpie Ethel every day, but especially every Tuesday where she has posted a different collection for the last three years and still going strong.  I must say, that whoever suggested that show her collections off was genius.  :D
Glitter Collection
(Okay, it might not be an official collection - but man, I love all this glitter!)

So, I am going to try and start photographing more of my collections.  That will make me organize them, dust them off, cull out the duds and arrange them.  I won't be featuring one every day or even every week.  But, from time to time, a collection will pop up and be recorded for prosperity.  (My, that sounds fancy!)

Alabaster Watermelon Slices

My parents went to Acapulco when I was a teenager.  And all they brought me back was this lousy watermelon slice.

BA-Dum-Dum.

I kid.

They brought me home the one shaped like a pie slice on the left.  One by one over the years I have found a slice here and a slice there.  A few have arrived on my doorstep from friends and blog readers.  I keep them in a bowl in the kitchen.  Since this was one of my first collections, I will probably have to keep it.  Shocker, huh?

Do you have a very favorite collection?  Of yours, I mean?

  3. I would have to say that my two favorite things I collect are Pyrex and vintage tablecloths. One of these days, I am going to take inventory of all of my collections and list them on my blog like you did.

  4. I love my pottery collection so much. I've got enough now that I'm starting to separate them into 'color' collections also. I love to visit collection blogs!

  7. I didn't even know alabaster watermelon slices even existed. Wonder what other things are out there that I don't know about collecting? I think my favorite collection right now is picnic baskets. Ask me next month and I'm sure it will be something else. What are you doing with all that glitter, girl?

  9. I love the two teeny slices in your collection best. I also love that the one your parents gave you is the only one in that shape. That's kind of sweet and cool.
