What is a monkeybox?

When I was a little girl, we had a pet monkey named Amanda. My Dad worked in the produce business, so each night he brought home that days culls in a big box - spotty cucumbers, pithy apples, limp celery, moldy oranges and the like. We called it a monkeybox. It was really just trash, but my Mom would take each piece of fruit and trim it, pare it and cut it up to make a beautiful fruit platter for Amanda. Even though it was deemed trash by one, it still had life left in it and was good for the purpose we needed it. That's how I live my life - thrifting, yard saling, looking for another's trash to be my treasure.

Vintage Santa: $2.00

I found this quirky Santa on one of my quick runs to Goodwill this week.

He's made out of a folded up magazine - each page precisely folded to make the shape of his body.  Then it was painted red and decorated to look like Santa.

I love old craft items like this - people 'back in the day" certainly used what they had on hand to make things.

I love his face, beard and hat.  He's certainly "kitsch-y", but he's kind of cool too.

He's headed to the booth tomorrow.  I hope someone else likes him too.

  1. My Mom had a set - Mr and Mrs Claus, I hadn't thought of them in a while....

  2. I made trees and large ornaments like that to have in my book store window. It has been amazing how many people have stopped in and said I did that as a kid.

  3. My friends and I made angels, then sold them in the neighborhood. What nice neighbors we had.

  4. How neat! My Grandma Jordan folded her a set of snow men, they were provably throw out long ago. I have most of her christmas decorations! Shes nice enough to let me borrow them for Thamsmass at the Casdablanca- if you go over to my blog and look at the post "Thanksmass 1958!" you can see all of Grandma's goodies!

  5. Oh my gosh! Just the other day I had a memory of being about 8 years old, and making this exact same thing but in a Mrs.Claus version! We did it at school. I wish my mom wouldn't have tossed it out. I suppose it got smooshed over the years.
    Thanks for sharing!

  6. They were typically made from Readers Digest.....we were eating at a funky restaurant this weekend and they were decorating with those (theirs was a Christmas tree). I loved telling my kids about making them them when I was a child.
