What is a monkeybox?

When I was a little girl, we had a pet monkey named Amanda. My Dad worked in the produce business, so each night he brought home that days culls in a big box - spotty cucumbers, pithy apples, limp celery, moldy oranges and the like. We called it a monkeybox. It was really just trash, but my Mom would take each piece of fruit and trim it, pare it and cut it up to make a beautiful fruit platter for Amanda. Even though it was deemed trash by one, it still had life left in it and was good for the purpose we needed it. That's how I live my life - thrifting, yard saling, looking for another's trash to be my treasure.

Word of Wisdom From My Mother

When I was a little girl, my Mother let a colloquialism slip and my little ears were shocked. But, I have remembered it my entire life. And on days like today, I look back fondly on her wise words.
"It's as cold as a Well Digger's ass."
She taught me other things too.

But, that whole "well digger" thing, well that always stuck with me.

It really is indeed, as cold as a Well Diggers.....well, you know.
Stay warm!

  1. Yup, moms can come up with some good ones. My mom's was "It's as cold as a witch's tit". That was always a shocker when she said it!

  3. Lord, I'm afraid of the coloquialisms my children will say they learned from me!

Either way, I'm glad I'm not a well digger today! It's 20 degrees this morning. I promise I won't whine when it's 103 in July!

  4. My dad always said "colder than a witch's t*t",too! We've reformed it because of kids and now, in my own family we say, "Colder than a witch's BROOM!"

  7. Here's my Mom's "naughty" poem that she always used to say:

Ladies and gentlemen take my advice, pull down your pants and slide on the ice"

Goes well with the picture for today too!
