What is a monkeybox?

When I was a little girl, we had a pet monkey named Amanda. My Dad worked in the produce business, so each night he brought home that days culls in a big box - spotty cucumbers, pithy apples, limp celery, moldy oranges and the like. We called it a monkeybox. It was really just trash, but my Mom would take each piece of fruit and trim it, pare it and cut it up to make a beautiful fruit platter for Amanda. Even though it was deemed trash by one, it still had life left in it and was good for the purpose we needed it. That's how I live my life - thrifting, yard saling, looking for another's trash to be my treasure.

Martha, Martha, Martha

Yesterday I saw on Sarah's blog that Big Lots had restocked their supply of Martha Stewart craft kits. The last time they had Martha Stewart items, it was mainly wedding type items. This time it was the glittered card kits, scrapbooks and lots of other wonderful craft kits. I had to go to the Post Office and the Library today, so why not hit Big Lots too? Oh sure, it's a special trip to another town, but why not?!

She shoots! She scores!

Everything was $2.00 each except the two smaller things which were only $1.00 each. I picked up a pompom insect kit and honeycomb birthday card kit.

Crepe paper roses and crepe paper black eyed Susan's along with a package of dimensional tomato stickers for $1.00. The flower kits look tedious, but fun.
A pipe cleaner forest kit that makes skunks, deer, mice and other woodland animals. I like to keep my hands busy when I watch TV or a movie, so these will be easy things to keep me busy - and actually look like they will be cute to boot!
Absolutely IN LOVE with these giant crepe paper flowers. In love! Not sure where on earth I can put them in my non-pink, non-girly home. But, by George, I will find a spot for them!

This glittered Rocket Mobile was hidden behind some other kits. If you do go to Big Lots, make sure to look at every single thing on each peg because there are different things behind other kits. I have been stalking these kits on Clearance at Wal-Mart for months. The lowest their kits have gone is $8.00-$5.00 each. So, to get all these for $2.00 each was a stellar deal. I wanted kits with bottles of glitter, but my Big Lots did not have any. I have a ton of Martha Glitter, but it is good stuff at a big price. Getting it for cheap would have been awesome. But, I am completely happy with my finds.
I personally get a kick out of getting such nice things at such a cheap price - I really am not a Martha fan. But, I do enjoy her kits! So, what are you waiting for? Go to Big Lots NOW! (And don't forget to pick up a big assed bag of Coconut M&M's too!)

  1. I've hit two big lots in the quest for Martha. Scored yesterday and got 3 glitter kits plus a bunch of other stuff. I wish they had the giant crepe paper flowers! Was a great deal none-the-less! The BL I hit today pretty much had only the pipe cleaner critters. Funny how they spread the stuff out...

  2. Nice score there!

I think I am going to hit another BL while Jack is at school.

I'm with Laurie, it's interesting to see how different stores have different stuff.
At ours, you do have to dig around a bit, some of it was in different places in the store.

  3. I've been on the hunt just like you and Laurie and Sarah. :) I hit my 2nd store last night. They didn't have anything interesting though--just more of the same as at the first store. I was tickled to find packages of the pink flower poofs because 1) I've loved those ever since I first saw them at Michael's and 2) I needed one more dark pink flower for Maren's room. Of course you know that we bought a package at full price (minus a 40% off coupon, but still) just a few weeks ago! Figures.

I did pick up a bunch of the pipe cleaner and pompom animals and hand puppets to do with Maren. She loves to "do a craft" with me and I figured that if we only do a few animals at a time (perfect for her attention span) those kits will last me for a long while!

  6. I found some, too! I am hoping to visit the Big Lots here in NY (I found my few at a BL in MD) but I now have to count on my husband to drive me around due to my medicine. GREAT. lol
