What is a monkeybox?

When I was a little girl, we had a pet monkey named Amanda. My Dad worked in the produce business, so each night he brought home that days culls in a big box - spotty cucumbers, pithy apples, limp celery, moldy oranges and the like. We called it a monkeybox. It was really just trash, but my Mom would take each piece of fruit and trim it, pare it and cut it up to make a beautiful fruit platter for Amanda. Even though it was deemed trash by one, it still had life left in it and was good for the purpose we needed it. That's how I live my life - thrifting, yard saling, looking for another's trash to be my treasure.

Hazel Gets New Old Digs

I stopped in the thrift today, promising ONLY to look for some sort of shelving* and nothing else.  They were bringing out the Halloween merchandise in big tubs and everyone was digging in it like crazy people.  Something vintage-y caught my eye, so I swooped in under a bunch of college kids and snatched out this homemade Halloween outfit.
I bought it with the intention to hang in on the wall.  But, when I got home, I tried it on Hazel and it FIT!  I like the fact that it is homemade and not really anything like a character. I guess it's a clown, but to me it just says Vintage Halloween.

It reminds me of this vintage costume from Country Living.
I think Hazel looks adorable in it.

Happy Halloween!

*I need shelving because I signed up for my second Flea Market booth this week.  A new store is opening in the tiny town over that is known for stellar antiques store and Flea Markets.  This store will feature only handmade, upcycled and vintage items and I am going to be one of the featured all vintage booths.  :)  I have a good sized booth and I cannot wait to get it set up.  It is in the town of the Super Cheap Thrift, so it will be so much easier for me to swing by and straighten it up than my other booth across the BIG town.

It Only Took a Minute

Today was one of those days where I needed to do this and I had to do that.  We needed bread (yes, I am married to The Breadman, but we NEVER have bread in the house) and lettuce and cat food and Doritoes (you can need Doritoes, can't you?).  I had packages to mail at the Post Office.  We needed to find something to eat.  And we had to find a book that was released today for The Bean.  He is a bookworm - loves his books.  A new book in one of his series came out today and he had planned out exactly how many pages he could read each day of the last book so that he would finish it today and be able to start the new one today too.  So, we had to find it TODAY!

So, we headed out to the Post Office, Sonic, the Bank, Wal-Mart and Target.  We left later than we should have and we really needed to get home.  So, time was of the essence.  We didn't have time for one more thing.  So, that obviously explains why I drove the car straight to Goodwill, right?  Something was calling to me inside there......

Before what I show you what it was - I must talk about how weird it was to find things that we had recently donated in there from my Grandmother's house.  I have looked at those items so many times, moved them from here to here, priced them, moved them again, boxed them up and donated them - I thought surely things were gone forever.  But, no.  I saw silverware, a teddy bear, some dishes, a lamp and a few other things.  I'm used to seeing things that I have donated at the thrift, it's just that I really thought that stuff was GONE when it left my hands for the last time.

But, enough about that.  What was calling to me?  Oh, my.  It's good.
Absolutely adorable porcelain babies from Japan.

Dated 1960 on the bottom (no pun intended).
Possibly one of the cutest things I have ever, ever thrifted.
Priced at $2.50 each, but today was Green Tag day and they had green tags - so $2.50 for the pair.

Love, love, love these babies.

And, that, my friends, is why you must always make time to stop at the thrift. :)

*We did find the book.  All is well in Beanland.

**The photos are wonky because the flash quit working on my trusty camera.  I have a new fancy PINK Cannon coming this week and I cannot wait!  Happy late birthday to meeeeeeeeeee.

The Blues

I've got the thrifting blues.  I haven't been thrifiting very much lately because it is so damn hot.  I know it is hot everywhere so no one really wants to hear me complain about the heat.  But, this is my blog so here I go.  IT IS HOT AND I HATE IT.  Okay, that is all.  It has been nearly or over 100 every day for weeks on end.  I saw 106 on the car thermometer today.  It is way too hot for garage sales and practically too hot to go anywhere at all.  Right now it is dark and thundering, but did we get even one single drop of rain? Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.  Pbthhhh.
Speaking of the blues, here are my finds for today's thrift run.  A lovely vintage blue tablecloth for $2.00 and a Mama and Baby Duck set for $1.50.  Now, these are not the Country Geese of the early 90's.  I remember them from Target a couple of years ago in white, yellow, orange, blue, etc.  I think I remember them being about $20.00 and $12.00 respectively.  So, $1.50 was a good deal.  They will look good in the yard with my lush green grass, massive flower garden and jumbo tomato plants.  Well, a girl can dream, right?

On tap Saturday:  A large Church sale within walking distance of my very own house.  WOO HOO.

And, on Tuesday, a GOODWILL opens right up the street a mere 1.8 miles away.  WOO FREAKING HOO!  I am not really a Goodwill fan, but I am hoping they get good stuff and have even better prices.  Iknow of two Goodwills - one is high priced and one is cheap, so we will see what happens in that respect.

Happy hunting everyone and STAY COOL.

Mmmmmm...doughnuts....Don't you just LOVE chocolate cake doughnuts with vanilla icing and pink sprinkles? And don't you love them even more when they are made of felt and not even edible? I saw these felt doughnuts on several blogs and thought they were fabulous. I toyed around with a pattern and was making it way too difficult. As it turns out, it is really easy once I used my right brain and figured it out. Der. I made this one very, very quickly just to see if it was going to work out and Wah-lah - it did. I bought every flavor of felt, I mean every color of felt today along with some sprinkles, I mean beads and some icing - uh, I mean fabric paint. I'm going to make a dozen and enter them in the fair this year. I make these inedible cherry pies and enter them in the fair too. One year I was turned away from the crafting area at the fair and told to go to the food entry division. Guess I fooled someone!

I've been thrifting here and there over the past few days. I bought this Dumbo Record Album set for $1.50. In normally shy away from records, but these are the old thick RCA Victor records and they are dated from 1947 from the original Dumbo Soundtrack. I'm hoping a Disney collector will swoop in on it. I am certainly NOT supposed to be buying any stuiffed animals and I most certainly am not supposed to be buying any bunnies as my bunny collection cup runth over. But, seriously, both of these brand new irresistable sweet bunnies were just a mere 25¢ each. The bear is a Boyds and was 25¢ at the Salvation Army. I laid it on the counter and the lady behind me picks it up and starts "Ooohing" and "Aaahhing" - "OH! That's a nice bear! The ones that move their arms are VERY VALUABLE. Oh, And he has a HUMP that makes his especially valuable. I collect bears and this is a a really, really nice specimen..." I think she thought the lady at the counter would hear her and ring up some inanely high price and I would shreik and run out of the store. Then she would swoop in and get it for HER collection - nice specimen my rear! Anyhooo, the nice SA lady said that will be...drumroll...25¢ and the lady behind me did the old, suck air through your teeth in shock move. So, narnee-narnee nar-nar lady.

I went to my super cheap thrift on Saturday. DS and I gatered up an armload of items and went to check out. The girl announced my total was a mere $2.75. I said that certainly sounded too cheap. "Oh, the whole store is half price today." Boy, take those parcels to the car - we's gonna shop some more! So, we made another spin around and gathered up $5.00 more. This is the thrift that is so cheap in the first place, let alone HALF PRICE. I got these two handmade baby quilts for $1.50 TOTAL. The thing is at this thrift is they are putting things out all the time you are shopping. I literally have to put blinders on to get out of there. They also save all their holiday items and put them out a the right time of year. There are hundreds of bunnies there - must not look.....

And lastly, I spotted this half an egg wagon at the thrift yesterday. (Pardon the el crappo photo). It is a Dept. 56 item and cute as all get out. It was priced $3.00 and for me, it might as well have ben priced at $30.00. I am so tight. Squeak. Squeak. And like I already said, I do not need anything holiday or bunny related. But, it was sooo cute. Okay, I'll splurge and spend THREE big old dollars JUST THIS ONCE. As I set it on the counter, I had one last monent of hesitation and guilt. Then the lady said, "Oh 50¢ otta cover it." I damn near kissed her.

Lots and lots of garage sales advertised this weekend. Spring done sprung!

I Learned to Clog Today - But not THAT kind

When we got home from the doctor yesterday, DH and I were discussing when DS should go back to school. (But, let's face it - I make all the parental decisions, so I already knew the answer.) Anyhoooo, when DH and I "decided" it would be Monday DS hooted and hollared and said, "Woo-Hoo - I get to watch the WEDDING on Regis & Kelly!" Me thinks he has been out of school too long.....

I decided to get a little crafty today. The mood often strikes me (to get crafty, that is) but I rarely actually do it. I had seen a pattern on allsorts for these adorable little Elf Clogs. At Christmastime I was too busy to make them, but the thought of them kept popping up in my mind. Today I decided to download the pattern and give them a try. I decided to make pink, red and white variations so I could pass them off for Valentine's Day. Since I made this pink one, I made a smaller white one with red hearts on it - I also whipstitched it and that gives it a neater edge. I made thee pink one pretty hastily and not so neat just trying to see how it would all come together. I will post a photo once I get a pair made. Now that I've made a couple - I think green for St. Patrick's Day Leprechan clogs would be sooo cute. The pattern is copyrighted by jenny so you can make them for yourself, but not for resell. Aren't they cute???

DS and I stopped in at one of the thrfts after picking up his prescriptions yesterday. He's always up for a thrift visit - he's been trained right! I usually visit this thrift early the day right as they open - in fact, they left me in earlier than they actually open. But, at that point in the day, the ladies that volunteer are always in the mindset that everything is old and antique and worth big $$. But, when I stopped in yesterday and they were about to close, I noticed the ladies were all tired looking and ready to go home. We picked up the new "King Kong" on DVD and "Spirited Away" on DVD (both still sealed) for $3.00 each, a Yu-Gi-Oh tin for 50¢ and a copy of "The Nanny Diaries" for 50¢ for a total of $8.00. But, when I checked out, the lady just sighed and said "Oh, $4.00 seems good enough." So, now I know to go late in the day and I might score a bargain!

I don't talk celebrity news or gossip - but I was sadden to hear about the death of Anna Nicole today. Mostly I worry about that brand new baby of her's. I always thought she was so pretty - dumb at times, but hey, that was part of her charm. After her son died, I was hoping she could get it together and raise her baby. It really is just so sad.

I Can See You!
