What is a monkeybox?

When I was a little girl, we had a pet monkey named Amanda. My Dad worked in the produce business, so each night he brought home that days culls in a big box - spotty cucumbers, pithy apples, limp celery, moldy oranges and the like. We called it a monkeybox. It was really just trash, but my Mom would take each piece of fruit and trim it, pare it and cut it up to make a beautiful fruit platter for Amanda. Even though it was deemed trash by one, it still had life left in it and was good for the purpose we needed it. That's how I live my life - thrifting, yard saling, looking for another's trash to be my treasure.

The Shareholders Meeting is over - everyone is on the way back home. Our town in returning to normal. We went to the Vendor Fair again today and brought home three more bags of stuff. I'm almost glad it's over! It's a job finding homes for all that stuff! I live about two miles form the University of Arkansas where the meeting takes place. I mentioned earlier in the week that Tim McGraw, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Journey and many others would be in concert, but there are always a few surprise guests the day of the meeting. (I wasn't there, but I would LOVE to be there one of these days just to see who comes.) This morning it was Queen Latifah, David Cook (AI winner), Jennifer Hudson, Joss Stone and a bunch of others. I just get a kick thinking that all those famous people were so close to my house. Yes, I have a silly sheltered life.

It makes me remember the famous people I have met in my life. My most memorable:
1) President Clinton. I actually shook his hand several times as he worked his way up to Governor here in Arkanas, but I also met him again when he was President. He was at the airport which, at the time, was a block from where DH and I were living. We walked back to the airport and stood in line to see him from a distance. His limo arrived and he and Hillary both got out and walked over to the crowd and shook hands. I was several people back in line and my hand didn't reach far enough out so he walked past me. He got a few people up from me, looked back at me, came back, shook my hand and said, "I missed ya, Darlin'" and went on down the line. I'm no looker, but I knew from that experience, that Mr. Bill had an eye for the ladies.

2) Fabio. He was at Sam's Club promoting his new line of clothing and I decided I had to go see some Fabio eye candy for myself. I stood in line and had my photo taken with him. I had to wait an hour to pick up the photo in the photo lab and when I got it, it was a blurry mess. I was so mad. I planned on putting that picture on my Christmas Cards with no explanation whatsoever. The funny thing was that when they took our picture, he stood right behind me and pulled me back towards him for the picture. I could feel his, forgive me here, package pressing into my spine halfway up my back because he was so tall and I am so short. I was kind of freaked out thinking, "Fabio's package is poking me in the back!" It wasn't a good kind of freaking out. More like a "holy crap" and "Eeeew" kind of freaking out. I never looked at Fabio the same way again.

3) The Pips. Gladys Knight and the Pips Pips. I was in HIgh School and attending the National High School Press Association Convention in St. Louis. A bunch of us were in our room goofing off late at night and we got hungry, so we ordered a pizza. The guy on the phone said they had another order for a pizza in the same hotel and they would be there in a bit. We opened our door so we could see him when he came up the hall. The door across the hallway from us opened two and these older black guys came out to wait for their pizza. They started talking to us about where we were from and what we were doing. We reciprocated and they laughed and told us they were The Pips. I was the only one that knew who the Pips were.

4) Midnight Star. Does anyone here (besides Sue) remember them? OH, how I loved Midnight Star. I went to a concert at the University when I was in high school. Something happened and the show started late. I was freaking out because I had Semester tests the next day and couldn't be tired. We were leaving and the lead singer stopped me and asked me where I was going. "Home to study" I said. "Oh, you gotta stay" he said, "We gonna dance!" Oh, no we not. Bye! (To this day, I wish I would have stayed and danced!).

That's all I can remember for me. DH had a beer with Garth Brooks and danced with Kathy Mattea once. My Mom was all hot and skinny in her bikini in Acapulco and she walked by Arnold Schwarzenegger at the pool. He looked at her BUTT! And, Maria saw him and was not happy with him! How's that for a celebrity story!!!!!!

So, who have you met? Or seen?

  1. Those are GREAT famous people stories! I love Clinton and the Pips ones the best!

Because of my job, I met a lot of authors, but that's exciting depending on if you read them or not. I've never met a President! I've seen or spoken on the phone to more famous people than I've met.

People I have actually met: Mary Higgins Clark, Janet Evanovich, Carl Bernstein. Famous people Ive seen up close in a social setting and could have asked for an autograph, but left them alone: Ethan Hawke, Bruce Springsteen, Mathew Broderick. I was an arm's reach from all three, but sort of felt bad because it was so clear each was enjoying time with their families. So I just tried not to stare!

i saw parker stevenson in mid-hardy boys fever in k-mart buying ban roll-on. i was about to rush him for an autograph when he lowered his shades and winked at me! no one believed me until a local show advertised a interview.

i also helped joe walsh from the eagles find st. pauly girl beer at piggly wiggly.

i sat next to bill gibbons of zztop during a crosby, stills & nash concert. an usher came and got him and took him back stage.

i met rod stewart in adark alley once. he had forgot his leather jacket at the concert venue and a friend was head of security, so he called me to go with him to deliver it to rod. he asked us to party with him, and my friend declined. then rod asked, "HOW ABOUT THE GIRL?" if i hadn't been married, i might be MRS. ROD STEWART right now!

  3. I'm SO CLUELESS when it comes to 'the famous'!! I always seem to be the one with the camera and someone I'm with will say "get a picture of ____" and I have to say "which one is that?" ...we DO get the photo though! That has happened with Richard Petty ('the tall one with the cowboy hat and the sunglasses') and Trace Atkins ('the tall HOT one leaning his foot on the ledge'). Then afterwards I have to go 'research' them so that I can appreciate my 'brush' with fame... 'Oh, famous NASCAR driver'... 'Oh, country singer - Honky Tonk Bawhatty what?'. GOOD for you to spot them on your own!!

OMG, Fabio's package had me laughing out loud! Maybe he was "packing", if you know what I mean. But does that make it better or worse?
