What is a monkeybox?

When I was a little girl, we had a pet monkey named Amanda. My Dad worked in the produce business, so each night he brought home that days culls in a big box - spotty cucumbers, pithy apples, limp celery, moldy oranges and the like. We called it a monkeybox. It was really just trash, but my Mom would take each piece of fruit and trim it, pare it and cut it up to make a beautiful fruit platter for Amanda. Even though it was deemed trash by one, it still had life left in it and was good for the purpose we needed it. That's how I live my life - thrifting, yard saling, looking for another's trash to be my treasure.

When It Rains....

...it pours.

The Breadman's Grandma died Friday morning.  We both only had one grandparent alive and they both died within five days of each other.  Really, unbelievable.

To make matters worse, The Bean's birthday is this weekend, so many plans we have had for months are being diverted or changed.  He is certainly old enough to understand what is happening.  But, it still doesn't take away from the sting that his Dad can't come to everything.  We bought very expensive tickets months ago to see The Blue Man Group on Sunday from 2-4.  And what hours are visitation?  2-4.  *Sigh.

I gotta be a MOM and make his birthday special and not one that he will remember as the birthday when both my Great Grandmother's died.

I'll be back someday with good news.  I promise!  Even if I have to make it up!

  1. Shara so sorry about the passing of the grandmothers. We have had a couple of deaths in the past 2 weeks. younger and unexpected. I am sure your son will understand. Can you grab someone to use your husband's ticket? We saw them in Boston very very funny. and your right the tickets are not cheap. Happy Birthday to the Bean!
