What is a monkeybox?

When I was a little girl, we had a pet monkey named Amanda. My Dad worked in the produce business, so each night he brought home that days culls in a big box - spotty cucumbers, pithy apples, limp celery, moldy oranges and the like. We called it a monkeybox. It was really just trash, but my Mom would take each piece of fruit and trim it, pare it and cut it up to make a beautiful fruit platter for Amanda. Even though it was deemed trash by one, it still had life left in it and was good for the purpose we needed it. That's how I live my life - thrifting, yard saling, looking for another's trash to be my treasure.

A Reason to Glitter (As if I needed one)

This morning the A/C guy knocked on my door and said he would be right back with the electrician do start the job. Mind you, this is five days early and I was a bit less than unprepared. So, I skedaddled around fast and did a bunch of preparations for them, got dressed really, really fast and waited for them to return. FIVE HOURS later he came back, looked around the house then said, "I'll be back Saturday." Eh gads, another day shot to hell. The only good thing about waiting for people to come do things at my house is this - I can't start any of my usual work or projects, so I tend to pull out my craft supplies and work on something until they do arrive.

Here's today's "Waiting for the A/C man to arrive" craft:

I think it turned out pretty darn cute, if I do say so myself. Especially considering the little guy is actually Halloween graphic wearing a Halloween hat. I cropped it off, added in a Patriotic hat from another image and added the flag onto the stick. The 4/4 card is from a 1939 "Flinch" card game. I've seen these card in other people's collages, but never knew exactly what they were until Sunday when I pulled a Flinch game out of my very own ebay stash. Who knew I had it all along! There are 10 sets of cards 1-15 for a total of 150 cards in all. I can create forever!!!!

I make the biggest mess when I do my crafting - dragging out everything in all the appropriate colors of buttons, rickrack, ribbon, papers and all my miscellaneous bits and bobs. The Bin "O Glitter makes an appearance and the various glues and glue guns get revved up. I am amazed that the junk, er, treasures that I have always loved and accumulated can turn into art! Old keys, scrabble tiles, flash cards, buttons - things that I think, "I'll use that someday" are suddenly being used!

The A/C people (all five of them) will be here Monday and Tuesday all the live long day, so there is no telling what I may crop, glitter and create! What's the next holiday?????? Halloween! Bring on the orange and black!

  1. I absolutely LOVE it! Nice work. :) At first glance I KNEW that was the Halloween boy but when I saw his hat & flag I was confused. I thought maybe there was a 4th of July image of him I had somehow missed. Little did I know it was just YOU being clever! LOL
