At the last Vintage Market I attended, I noticed an over abundance of succulents in planters. Like, in every booth. Hmmm, why was I not aware that succulents are HOT? A little trip to Lowe's to price check succulents made me realize that it was not going to be cost effective to buy thirty bucks work of tiny plants. There had to be a cheaper route. THINK WOMAN, THINK. So, I put on my thinker and I walked around my own yard and that's when the angels sang and I heard a choir sing- HENS AND CHICKENS. The official plant of women over 60 everywhere. (I am not over 60, thanyouverymuch).
A couple of years ago I was at one of my favorite yard sales and the lady (who is over 60) was commenting on her Hens and Chickens and how rapidly they were growing that year. I told her that I had been wanting some to fill up an old wagon, so she graciously pulled up about five and gave them to me. Well, Hens and Chickens are a lot like bunnies - first you have five, then you have twenty five, then you have a whole hell of a lot of Hens and Chickens!
So, what better way to be cost effective than to use FREE plants you already own? I rounded up all my vintage pieces of pottery that I cannot seem to sell anywhere. It's all pretty enough, just not a good seller, I guess. I drug the wagon up on the porch because it has been raining for a week solid. (Better this week, than next week....fingers crossed). I pulled up the large Hens and Chickens and found runners under them as well as the smaller ones that were already growing around the wagon. I was able to plant nine planters full, plus a new washtub full in my own yard. FOR FREE! Woot!
The little succulents in the old pottery was good enough for me to like it, but I am but a simple woman. HAHAHAHAHAHA I like CUTE and CHARMING and LOOKIE AT THAT sort of stuff, so I had to make them interesting. Cue the tiny toadstools and tiny deer that I put on everything when I want it to be CUTE and CHARMING and LOOKIE AT ME!. (I bought hundreds of those deer and toadstools at a yard sale years ago - for like, nadda).
They were now what call cute enough, but they still needed a bit of sumthin-sumthin'. So, I added my love of tiny cake buntings to the planters. A pack of 100 kabob skewers and two rolls of Washi Tape later, I had made nine wee banners. Each planter is different and each banner is different so no two are just alike. I do hope they sell this weekend. Because I do NOT need nine of these in my personal possession!
*I'm looking forward to meeting some of you that are coming to the sale! Well, not some of you! All of you! Just be patient and remind me WHO you are! This world of meeting people that know me from the blog and Instagram is all new and really kind of weird and wonderful all at the same time. It's great meeting people, but it's like they know everything about me and I know nothing about them but their name. And not even their real name - like Possum or MerryVintage. Someone yells, "Hey Monkeybox and even I look around like,"Who's monkeybox?" OH WAIT, THAT'S ME!" ANywhoooo - It will be great to meet any and all of YOU!
oh I love it! adorable!
ReplyDeleteThat is really cute - genius idea on the Hens and Chickens. DH has a part time job at a plant nursery and he says Hens and Chickens are one of the top sellers. I never would have believed that. Good luck with your sale next week!

Hens and chickens come to my yard to die. I don't know what I do wrong! I'm almost 62, this isn't supposed to happen, apparently...Sandy in PA
ReplyDeleteOk, so first I had to google "hens and chickens" because I had no idea what they were. I am so not a garden person I'm not even sure if they grow in my yard here on the East Coast. But love the idea of those little planters and they look adorable! I think you'll sell them all! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteInsert sad face, wish I was closer so WE could meet in person after 11 years or more of online friendship.
ReplyDeleteHow creative and cute are those planters!! I love them. I love hens and chickens... Maybe because I'm over 60? Nah, I've always loved them. Good luck... Wish I was close enough to attend.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE these. I mean, Luh-huh-HUVE these. :D I think they are darling with the added cuteness of the shrooms & banners & deer and I think it is awesome that you were able to plant them all for almost free! Woohoo!
