Happy Halloween! Boo!
1. I think we are getting sick. Sore throats, headaches, red eyes. Boo!
2. I couldn't find anything clever to give the trick or treaters this year so we are passing out peanut butter cracker packs. In the past we have passed out Twinkies, Campbell's Soup banks, Kool Aid packets and mini loaves of Wonder Bread. I like to be original and not pass out candy. I am such a spoilsport. Boo!
3. 10-31-1990 was the first time The Breadman and I spent any alone time together. The day we became friends. Best friends - together all the time friends. That used to mean a card and maybe some flowers. A couple of years ago, he forgot and he hasn't remembered since. :( Boo!
4. I went to Goodwill in search of vintage Halloween and ended up buying an Easter decoration. Boo!
5. I didn't sell one single Halloween item that I took to my booth. I still think my things are cute and sweet, so I will not give up. But, golly, I wish I might have sold something....Boo!
6. My checker at Walmart today was dressed as a giant hotdog. Boo!
7. None of our neighbors are into fun stuff like "Boo'ing" each others houses. I think it would be fun though. Boo!
8. When I went down the Halloween candy aisle today it had been replaced with Candy Canes and Gift sets. Boo!
9. My kid is too old to go trick or treating and dressing up and I really miss that. Boo!
10. I need to bring in my pumpkin before the hooligans take it to smash in the street. Boo!
Happy Halloween to you. My November 1st bring you sacks of half price candy of your most favorite variety. I hope to find a years supply of Vanilla Tootsie Rolls at Target. *Fingers crossed!*

Purex Plus Oxi Review + Surprise!
This morning my doorbell rang and it was the FEdEx man. Woot! Love the FedEx man - he nearly always brings a surprise that I didn't know was coming. Today he brought me a bottle of new PUREX Plus Oxi laundry detergent compliments of Purex Insiders.
I have honestly used Purex Detergent my entire laundry doing life. So, I knew that this would be good laundry soap from the get-go. And, as a junker and collector of vintage linens, I use Oxi all the time to get stubborn stains out of my tablecloths. So, Purex with Oxi - COunt me in!
I decided my first load would be a big load of the Breadman's uniforms. I hate to tell you that the guys that deliver your freshly baked pristine loaves of bread are grubby. Really grubby. Big dirty racks of dirty trays with that freshly baked bread on it that they wheel in and out of the stores and onto their trucks. By the time The Breadman gets home, he is a dirty wreck. It's even worse in the summer when you add in sweat and, well, you can imagine. :O
So, I threw all his nasties in the laundry and added in the Purex Plus Oxi Laundry Soap, said a little, prayer, closed the lid and hoped for the best. When the cycle was complete, I pulled it all out to have a look at it. His grubbies were no longer grubby. The white Wonder Bread insignia on his shirt was actually WHITE again! It has been a dingy beige color. His shirts looked nice and his pants looked nice once again. Now I can send him out into the world looking slightly less disheveled. His appearance is a reflection upon me, I think.
Like I said, I've always used Purex laundry detergent, or laundry soap as we call it around here, and I always will. But, I will mostly likely make a point to pick up the new Purex Plus Oxi in the future.
Purex is having a sweepstakes and YOU could win! There will be one (1) Prize. The Prize winner will receive $1,000 in the form of a check or gift card and a (1) year supply of Purex plus Oxi detergent in the form of 10 “Free Coupons” valued at up to $6.00 per coupon. Halloween Hazel
I forgot to show Hazel in her vintage Halloween costume. I love this because it is simply "Halloween" and not a dress-up outfit.
Halloween Hazel*
Hazel=Best Two Dollars I ever spent.
Hazel is a 1955 Buster Brown clothes and shoe mannequin.
I cropped out all the junk, but it won't update, so here she is with the Wii and the DVD's in plain sight. And maybe a cat toy and some dust. But, no one will mention that, RIGHT?
Forgive me for showing a mannequin dressed up for every holiday and season. I don't have a cute little kid to dress up or take to the pumpkin patch** or do any of that fun stuff with anymore. So, hazel will have to do!
**That's not to say that I didn't take The Bean to the Pumpkin Patch anyway.
You are MY kid, you live in MY house so you WILL go to the Pumpkin Patch with me. Thankfully, he still likes to do stuff with MOM. Whew!

Boo-YAH
I brought my Halloween decorations into the living room TWO weeks ago. I had to get through my Dad and the hospital then The Breadman being on vacation before I could even think about decorating. Yesterday I realized that if it didn't gt done RIGHT NOW, it wasn't going to get done. And, that wasn't an option. I have a lot of stuff, but I can justify keeping it when I use it to decorate. But, if it just sits in tubs in the garage, what good is it? So, I gave myself two hours to, in the words of Larry the Cable Guy, "Git 'er done." And, I did!
I have this super tall cabinet that is new to me this holiday season, so figuring out how to use it has been interesting. I decided to put all of my vintage items on top so they are safe. As much as I love vintage holiday items, halloween is the one holiday I have the least amount of vintage items. They are hard to find!
I've had all those Gurley candles sitting in a jar in my office all year waiting to be put with the Halloween decorations. I can't believe I actually remembered that I had them!
I see now that I took this photo before I tweaked everything, so it's not that great of a photo. I do love those silly pumpkins on the middle shelf.
Some of my odds and ends. I made those little witch shoes a few years ago. The pictures are my Mom trick or treating as a kid. Those tiny little trick or treaters in the bottom left corner were some of our decorations from when I was a kid. I don't know how I have kept track of them all these years.
I wasn't going to put up my tree this year, but I have so many wonderful decorations from swaps and thrifts, that I just had to use it.
Fun stuff on the tree from friends around the internet.
Tiny trick or treat pumpkins.
It's packed full, but I like it that way.
Do you see anything YOU made?
A big pumpkin and a couple of witches. (Pay no attention to the bald headed baby!)
The windows over the couch. I wanted to add some tissue paper fringe across the top of the window, but my time ran out!
Is your house decorated for Halloween yet?
(I am already starting to panic about decorating for Christmas!)

The Week in Junk 10/21/2012
I had a pretty good weekend of junking - FINALLY! Most of it is for the booth, but as usual, some will stay with me. :)
The Breadman was on vacation this week. Let me say, having a husband underfoot all week is really, really exhausting. We were on the GO all week. So, compile the week before with my Dad in the hospital and now this week of going, going, going and I am ONE TIRED BROAD. Tonight, he was all weepy and sad, "I'm sorry I have to go back to work tomorrow" and I was "Don't let the doorknob hit you where the good lord split ya". You know what I mean, right?
So, in the midst of all the go, go, going, I managed to squeeze in several trips to thrifts and hit several yard sales. I was particularly excited about an ABSOLUTE ESTATE sale only about two blocks from my house. The ad was great - vintage this and vintage that, vintage holiday, vintage aprons, 80 years accumulation, and on and on. So, I get there Friday morning and there are a few random shed sort of things scattered in the front yard, the front door is standing wide open and there is a table with a few men sitting around it just glaring at me. They all kind of look shifty to me, so I drive on by. I went home and loaded up my big strong menfolk and go back. I mean, I don't like shifty guys, but if there is some good vintage junk to be had - I'm going IN! When we got there, the guys still just kind of ignored us, so I finally asked if we could go inside. " "We didn't really get nuthin' ready for today. We might have it ready ta-morrow." Did I mention the ad said THOUSANDS of knick knacks? How did they "think" they might get 80's years worth of things ready overnight and didn't? I did go back on Saturday and the gate was locked. I guess they didn't get it read ta-morrow.
I did manage to buy this old handmade beat up bench out of the yard before I left on Friday. I had seen several like these just the day before for about fifty bucks each. This one was five bucks. I think I could have offered less, but I wanted to get out of there!
On to the rest o' the junk! I found vintage Christmas, a tablecloth, a basket and a piece of pottery, so that is a good weekend in my book.
Thursday we went to a huge craft fair with over 1000 vendors. One part is entirely juried crafts and the other part is crafts and some flea markety booths. Most of it is really high priced, but I like to look anyway. In one of the booths, I spotted a huge enamel stockpot filled overflowing full of brand new vintage baby clothes. Starched, pins still attached, tags attached, etc. Each one was sweeter than the next. I bet there were 100 all together. Each one was only $1.50 each which really surprised me. I was expecting them to be a lot more than that. The lady told me that she found them in her attic and had completely forgotten that she even had them, so she was happy that someone was buying some of them. Later that night, I was in the shower when it occurred to me that I should have made her an offer for all of them. I know they would have been great on Etsy. Oh well.....
The whole kit and kaboodle.
Large wire freezer basket filled with gutted reader's Digest Condensed Books. have you seen the boxes made out of old books? Book boxes I finally found some old Reader's Digests with pretty covers to try it out. These are all from 1954 and 1955, so they have really pretty covers.
A good old basket like I collect. It took four people and an phone call to determine if it was for sale and it it was, the price. A price of $2.00 was decided and it was SOLD. Some old coffee cups and some Melamine plates - 55¢ for it all.
Flip her upside down and she is Grandma.
Turn her bonnet around and it is the big bad wolf.
A huge Haeger planter. (I was sure it would go to the booth, but I managed to squeeze it onto my packed shelves.) Vintage bunny planter, old sun bonnet made from a feedsack and a pile of wooden drapery rings that I am hoarding to use in a future project.
Loved the "God Bless Our Camper" plate.
Six Ball jar glasses, a sugar bowl, wooden box, blue cat planter, old fruitcake tin, couple of old dolls, an enamel rose bowl, two tiny glasses, gingham chicken scratch tablecloth and a wonderful old Santa.
The blue cat planter is a keeper. The tiny glasses laying on their sides are keepers too. Why, I really don't know. I just like them!
So, what did you find this weekend?
Jell-O Mold Christmas Wreaths
I saw on Pinterest a wreath made out of a bundt pan. It was just the bundt pan with a ribbon attached for hanging. It stuck in my head as an idea, but with my own twist. I rarely ever make anything exactly like the things I "pin". I mostly use it as a springboard to make something more like the things I like. I like using my "junk" to make stuff.
So, I had these old Jell-O molds kicking around forever. I decided they would make most excellent Christmas Wreaths.
I took this copper wreath and added some vintage plastic greenery and a red glittery bell. Then I took small glass ornaments and put them inside a giant vintage light reflector to make a flower of sorts. I really like this one even though the colors aren't my usual colors. It will go to the booth this week.
This great old aluminum wreath had a nice patina to it. I added vintage silver foil leaves, silver pipe cleaner twists (wrapped around a pencil to make a spring), a silver slight reflector with a red Shiny Brite mini ornament in the center and some red bells to make it POP. I really like the red and silver combination. This one will stay with me.
Of course, now that I made these two, I want to make MORE. But, all the Jell-O molds I find lately are priced $4-5 each which is crazy! I know I have only paid a little bit for each of the ones I bought in the past. I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for more molds in the future.
What do you think?

A Little Bit of Junk
Well, it's Tuesday and that's the one day I work for five big hours at the Flea Market. Whew. Am I beat! Actually, I am tired - I have to get up earlier than I normally do(so I can leave and visit the Super Cheap Thrift on the way), I am on hard concrete floors all day which is killer on my legs, I climb up and down ladders, carry furniture out for customers, rearrange booths after a big item sells, run the register, stock my booth, straighten outside and yadda, yadda, yadda. It is a rushed five hours and it wears me out!
This morning I found good amount of things at the SCT. One cool thing I forgot to photograph is a huge hand blown bottle of some sort. It had Christmas holly and lights in it and everyone at the thrift was ooh'ing and ahh'ing over it even though I thought it looked particularly hideous with that stuff in it. Once I got home, I cleaned it out and washed it - it is really cool. I hope I am able to figure out how to make a lamp out of it. If that doesn't work, I will fill it full of something.
These are the items I bought and took straight to the booth. VIntage 4 piece Hostess Set, two wooden Munising bowls, Richard Simmons Book, Rachel Ray book, cute doll with chicken dress, Carnival glass candy jar, two HOMCO elves, cobalt blue planter (under the doll) and a 1950's planter shaped like a giant egg cup. Grand total for everything: $5.85. Lord, I do love my Super Cheap Thrift! Some of those things don't look like my usual things like the books and the doll. But the books were 10¢ each and the doll was 50¢. I have a $5.00 book rack and I put $10.00 on the doll. That's a quick $20.00 for those three items. My initial investment of $5.85 priced out at $84.00 when I was done.
I was a bit smitten with this sweet Hostess set still in it's original box. Four plates and four cups. Cake and punch? Sandwich and coffee? Mmmmm.
I brought home only a few things. A funny Japanese egg shaped doll, a sweet porcelain Japanese doll and a glass bird that I think might be Lalique or Fenton.
This ornament tree was still in the original box from Pier One. I think it will sell at Christmas time. Or I will use it to display my glittered cookie cutter ornaments.
I went to the Salvation Army this afternoon and LOOK at what someone had donated!
A complete vintage Merry Go Round with two benches and fourteen cast iron carousel horses.
The horses were amazing. It was $1999.99 for everything, which if you think about it, that's a pretty good deal. That made each horse $142.00 not including the benches or the track. Who would donate that?
And, proof that I do have a knack for "finding" junk. We went to Walmart so The Breadman could deposit his check. While he went in, we drove around the parking lot to look at a truck with a weird HUGE item under a tarp on it. (We thought it was the White House Christmas Tree it was so big, but it turned out to be a HUGE tree.) Anyway, something caught my eye in the grass, so i swung around for a closer look.
Lying in the grass there were 22 albums and two big boxed sets of albums. In the Walmart parking lot. Really weird. I scooped them up just in case there was a copy of The Beatles White Album in there. (There wasn't...) I'll drop them off at Goodwill where at least they will have a chance of being saved and not thrown in the landfill.
So, a little bit of junk to tie my over until the Vintage Christmas Motherlode. (I can dream can't I?)

My Favorite Time of the Year
My Dad is doing great - back to himself and feeling good. It was a long week!
Almost overnight, like magic, the trees have turned gold, red and orange.
We spent a day walking along the shore of the lake looking at rocks and throwing sticks. The lake is really low. You know out on the lake, they have those orange buoys that float to let you know BEWARE: Deep Water or TREE under water? Things like that?
Well, this one is a long, long way from shore. The lake is low, I tell ya.
See the hints of color in the background? We went back today and there was even more color.
This is a manmade lake, so there are things that were under the lake for fifty years. Like this old tiure under this giant rock. Landlocked now.
Someday I think The Bean will have a cabin by the lake. He'll just walk the shore with a stick for poking at things. He'll gather up pretty and unusual rocks and pile them outside his cabin. Inside his cabin will be stacks and stacks of books.
The Breadman is on vacation this week so we have lots of activities planned like going to another lake, going to a Mill (by another lake!), looking at leaves, a couple of picnics and a day of burning leaves and brush in the backyard. I'll be working that day as I am allergic to smoke. But, I am happy they are willing to do it.
I'll be back with the usual October-y posts like The Pumpkin Patch and pretty fall leaves.
I LOVE THIS TIME OF YEAR!
*PS. I FOUND my Halloween decorations. They were LOST. But, I found those rascals and now I can orange and black this joint UP!

Update
My Dad is still in the hospital. Word is that he will probably go home tomorrow. I'm packing up to go home with him for the night - longer if needed. His procedure went well in as it worked and his heart rate is at a good even rhythm where it was very irregular in the past. The procedure took about six hours and he was under anesthesia the whole time. When they took him off, he wasn't breathing on his own, so they had to intubate him. Later that day, a nurse would assure me that is not uncommon. I have always trusted the word of a Nurse more than the word of a doctor, so I chose to believe that.
When the doctor came out and told me this, he told me to watch for signs of a stroke and generally freaked me out, then it was another four hours before I was even able to see him with my own eyes. When I finally walked into the room, he looked opened his eyes to look at me, then closed them like he didn't recognize me. I said, "Do you know who I am?" He looked at me and said, "Beverly?" I said, "This is SO not the time to be funny, Leon!' He laughed, "I am kidding, Shara." He is fine in that respect and his heart rate is good. But since he didn't have a drop of food or fluids in 36 hours he is obviously dehydrated so they are working on that. I can see that. Can't you? But the nurses are all like, "HUH. Wonder why you are so dehydrated." Seems kind of obvious to me. But, I got thrown out of Medical School long ago, so what do I know. :)
The main thing right now is that his breathing is kind of shallow and short. But, the respiratory therapist says his lungs are clear and his breathing is fine. I think a lot of that has to do with having a pipe shoved down his throat for six hours. The Respiratory therapist said that has a lot to do with it. Hey - maybe I can get that Medical degree after all.
Here's his main problem. He is CRANKY. And, I don't blame him. No sleep with everyone poking and prodding on you every ten minutes all night long, no solid food (he has to eat only cold or room temperature soft food for two weeks (That is a LOT of yogurt and pudding), peeing in a bottle, wearing a hospital gown, laying in bed, not having a shower or being allowed to brush his teeth in three days- well, I would be cranky too. So, if the hospital says he can go home, home he will go. A shower, a good night's sleep in his own bed with his own pillow and his big screen TV with FOX news blasting away all day and he will be good as new. The doctors SWEAR he will feel GREAT and be BETTER THAN EVER and all that jazz. He just had to take a little slide backwards to get ahead.
*Ten bonus points and a big thank you for reading this entire post if you aren't even related to me. :)
P.S. Have you seen the new PINK pumpkins?

A Quick Note
I'll be gone most of the week. MY Dad is going into the hospital to have a Catheter Ablation. He has had an irregular heart beat for a couple of years now. He has been on numerous heart medications, but none of them ever work. He has had to spend time in the hospital while they got one medication out of his system and another one started. But, nothing has worked. Having said that, he is full of energy and on the go all the time. He never feels bad.
This new procedure is supposed to correct the irregular heart beat so he won't have to be on any medication. His heart rate should be normal after tomorrow. He'll be awake during the procedure, which involves running a probe up his leg into his heart and then freezing off the bad part of the heart that causes the irregular heartbeat.
The doctors all say, "It is an easy procedure!" "We do it all day long every day!" and "He'll do great!" But, golly, it is his HEART after all. That sucker is kind of important. He will be in the hospital most of the week while they make sure the beat stays consistant before they let him go home.
I'll be back when I can - thanks for your kind thoughts that I know you are sure to post. You are all so darn NICE! :)

A Good Junk Fix
This morning I woke up dreaming of all of the yard sales I saw on Craigslist last night. That's when I heard the BOOM of thunder and the dripping of rain off the roof. The bad thing about yard sales and rain is that yard sales get cancelled in the rain. But, the good thing is that they get rescheduled, so you really don't end up "missing" anything in the long run. But, still I wanted some JUNK.
I had told the boys yesterday that even though I bring things home from the thrifts, I haven't found anything really GOOD in a long time. You know what I mean, something amazing that you cannot believe you just found. Like you have Fort Knox in the back of your car and you have to get home NOW before someone robs you of your treasure. Even though it might be an old quilt or a piece of Pyrex - to you, it is GOLD.
While it rained and I drank my coffee, I looked through Craigslist just for a time killer. I saw an ad that simply said BASKETS. I don't know why I clicked on it, I assumed it was going to a pile of old florist baskets, but I always have that hope that I will find a great old market basket or a picnic basket. So, I clicked on the ad and I saw the most glorious sight.
Vintage shopping baskets from an old Ben Franklin. Whaaaaat? I NEED THESE. The price would have been killer for one basket. But, the ad was for THIRTY baskets and two wire racks. Two complete sets of vintage shopping baskets. I sent an email to the seller, hoping they were still there. I included my email, home phone, cell phone and social security number. Ok, not that last one, but I wanted them to know I was a serious buyer.
We had errands to run, so we left without hearing a word. I checked my email a few times in between errands, but there wasn't anything. Just as I pulled into Sam's Club, my phone rang. It was the BASKET man! Woot! He was about 30 miles away, but as luck would have it, I was on the very same highway that lead right to his front door, so off we went. I told him I would be there in about 35 minutes and he said his wife would be home by then so I didn't have to worry about being alone with a man. Well, I wasn't until he said THAT! Besides, I had The Bean with me. Halfway there I decided I should tell my Mother where we were going lest the Craigslist Killer answered the door. She was relieved I told her and demanded that I tell her the minute I left his house. (You are never too old to report to your Mom!)
When I pulled into the driveway, he opened the garage door, set the baskets out, took the money and went back inside. It was very fast and safe. We loaded the baskets into the back of the car and I squealed out not believing what I had just bought! I've looked at these old baskets on ebay and wished I could find one at a sale. They make great storage or to hold projects. Not to mention, they are very collectible.
Each basket is made of a heavy oilcloth stretched over a wire frame. They have a carrying handle and say BEN FRANKLIN on the front and the back. They are all in great shape. Bonus - when I counted them there were thirty ONE baskets. The seller told me that a friend of his had cleaned out an old Ben Franklin and threw most of the things away (NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!). The guy was on his way to the dumpster with the baskets, but he (the seller) took them instead. He had three sets, but I was lucky enough to get the other two. Yes, I will be selling them. :) Most of them. Some of them. Well, we'll see. (I really will sell a lot of them!)
Finally a GOOD JUNK FIX!

The Week in Junk - Better Late Than Never
I haven't done my Week in Junk post lately. It seems that I haven't found much and what I do find goes straight to the booth from the thrift and never enters my house. That, my friends, is a good thing!
*Before I write this post, I must tell you that I went to the Optometrist today and had my eyes dilated That was at 2:20 this afternoon and just now at almost 11:00 I can finally see. What a long day it has been! I decided that surely I could take some pictures for this post with my giant dilated pupils. But, after seeing these photos, I think I was wrong! They looked blurry to me when I was taking them, but I just now see that they really ARE blurry. Sorry.....
I found these three green glass vases for 25¢ each at the SCT yesterday. I see these a lot, but I never pick them up. But, for some reason, seeing all three lined up, well, they just appealed to me. I will put them in the booth for a few dollars each.
This silly yarn witch will go to the booth and mostly likely NOT sell and be forced to come back home and live in my Halloween Rubbermaid tub.
This little elf is well made and cute, but that styrofoam ball head has got to go. I'll have to make him a new one.
This wee crocheted bunny reminds me of the new Japanese characters.
I'll put him in the booth too.
I saw these two Department 56 rabbits at Goodwill last week. I don't need anymore bunnies and my Easter tubs are chock full, so I left them behind. But, I kept thinking about them. Today I went back and they were still there. They were priced $2.00 each, but for some reason the lady only charged me 50¢ each.
Here's why I like them - each one is three pieces - the middle part is an egg that has the vest decoration on it. You can put them in jaunty poses since they top half and bottom half rotate on the egg. Although I almost always prefer vintage, I do like Dept. 56 items and the lie that are vintage inspired.
I bought a big basket full of these giant pine cones today. That is a Qt. Mason Jar beside it. Each one is about a foot tall. They are awesome and I have no idea what to do with them, but I bought them anyway.
This sweet little Annalee was a happy surprise in the Goodwill bins waiting on the floor to be put out. They don't mind if you dig in the bins, so I dig in those bad boys. I thought her apple pie motif was timely what with all my apple picking and apple baking lately. I don't have many non seasonal Annalee's.
This My Child Doll was at my Flea Market for $2.00. When I saw her, somewhere in the wayback of my mind I remembered that people collect them. Some on ebay have gone for $150.00 and up. This one is a green eyed blonde and in good condition, so we will see what happens. My Child Doll on ebay if you are curious.
I bought this gorgeous Hermes 3000 typewriter from someone on our local Facebook YS page. This typewriter has a huge following and is highly sought after. So, I took a chance and spent $50.00 on it. I had just sold something for $45.00 on the same site, so I basically flipped that money. Wish me luck - I never spend that much on anything to resell. *Gulp!
And, finally, the perfect thrifted item. The reason I go thrifting and what I hope to find. A small piece of vintage pottery in the loveliest shade of seafoam green. It's only about three inches tall and has the heft and coolness to the touch that only true vintage pottery has when you hold it. Plus, it was only 25¢, which just makes me even happier! I can always sqeeeeze one more tiny piece of pottery on the shelves.
This weekend is typically another stellar weekend for yard sales since there is a big Apple Festival in a neighboring town. But, the weather for this weekend is truly heinous - it will be 85 tomorrow and drop to a HIGH of 45 on Saturday. It's never that cold her until close to Thanksgiving. I can handle the cold, I LOVE cold, but it is supposed to spit rain and be generally icky all weekend. BOO! I need a fun weekend with good junk and some delicious cider. Yes, I DO!
