What is a monkeybox?

When I was a little girl, we had a pet monkey named Amanda. My Dad worked in the produce business, so each night he brought home that days culls in a big box - spotty cucumbers, pithy apples, limp celery, moldy oranges and the like. We called it a monkeybox. It was really just trash, but my Mom would take each piece of fruit and trim it, pare it and cut it up to make a beautiful fruit platter for Amanda. Even though it was deemed trash by one, it still had life left in it and was good for the purpose we needed it. That's how I live my life - thrifting, yard saling, looking for another's trash to be my treasure.

The Week in Junk: Don't Be Crewel

Saturday morning I set my alarm earlier than normal so I could get up and hit a few sales, visit the Super Cheap Thrift and then work in my booth a bit before it got too busy.  I was on my way there last Sunday morning, when for no apparent reason, the car lost power in the middle of the road. (I have a fear of car trouble.  That is why we have a new car and we will always have a car payment.  It is worth if to have a warranty and roadside repair and all that.)  The wrench light was lit up on the dashboard.  I called home to say what was happening (after I got off the road) and The Breadman remembered a recall notice that had come but he hadn't attended to it.  Luckily, it started right back up and I got home safe.  It was a control and not really the car itself.  The control couldn't read the throttle so it didn't know if the car was going 10 mph or 100 mph, so it just shut the car down completely.  NOT COOL.  I was fortunate that no one was behind me and that I wasn't on the Interstate with all the crazy speedsters with Road rage that would have piled up on me.  WHEW.  Long story short - it's fixed and cost NOTHING so that's is all that matters.  WHEW again!

So, I was going to get up this morning early already, but then the mowers started up in the neighborhood even before that, so I got an early start (for me).  There were signs everywhere and I was excited!  I stopped at four sales before I ever even made a purchase.  Booooooo.  That's no fun at all!  I finally bought a huge frame that had an Dry erase bard in it.  I asked them if they would like to try to sell the board since I only wanted the frame.  you would have thought I handed them a blank check.  They said, "We could probably get another DOLLAR out of that!"

Two more sale and still not another purchase.  I was getting panicked!  Where is all the good junk?????  At least I had the Super Cheap Thrift to hit.  I really never get anything amazing there. But, it is good for a look around and a bagful of things for less than a few dollars.  They had a huge pile of touristy souvenir plates for 50¢ each.  I debated on them and then decided against them.  Now I am thinking they would have been good for The Junk Ranch.  I may have to go back for them.

After I left the thrift, I rounded the corner and saw one of my favorite sales.  This man works for my favorite auction company.  He buys box lots and hauls the leftovers home from all the auctions. When his shed is full, he throws it all out in the yard and has a sale.  And it is cheap.  SO very cheap. Whenever I go to his sales, I pick up anything that I can use, or is interesting or that I can sell or research because I know I can afford it.  I never ask for prices because it is going to be cheap.  This time I got an ihome iphone alarm clock radio that I am SO happy to have - I don't know why it was still sitting there at noon.  But, I am glad that it was!  I got several sets of old beer glasses for one booth, a set of Martini glasses and a lovely set of glasses with an "S" etched into each one.  I love finding "S" things since S is both my first and last initial.

My best find was a huge storage tub full to the top with Needlepoint and Crewel kits.  All new and from Hobby Lobby.  There were 21 new kits in there (I didn't realize there were that many until I got home) as well as a huge stack of new Aida cross stitch material, tons of old velvet ribbon and some other crafty things.  Guess how much he said for the whole tub full.  THREE DOLLARS.  Actually, he thought long and hard and said, "Would you give me three dollars for it?"  NO DUDE, I will give you ONE DOLLAR. ha.  I happily paid a grand total of $5.00 for everything I picked out.

I already have all twenty one kits listed on ebay and I already sold a Latch Hook Kit right off the bat. Sometimes I buy things that excite me because I love them.  But, sometimes, I am only in it for the money and that is one of those times.  These kits don't do much for me, but the money does!  :)

Sorry for the lack of photos of the other things.  I was buys listing all day Sunday and never got a chance to take any for fun photos.  I hope you all had a junk filled weekend!

  3. So glad the car trouble was not serious. That scared me reading about it. Gotta love those regular reliable sales and sellers. And it's perfectly okay to junk for the bucks it will bring. Sometimes you gotta do it.
