What is a monkeybox?

When I was a little girl, we had a pet monkey named Amanda. My Dad worked in the produce business, so each night he brought home that days culls in a big box - spotty cucumbers, pithy apples, limp celery, moldy oranges and the like. We called it a monkeybox. It was really just trash, but my Mom would take each piece of fruit and trim it, pare it and cut it up to make a beautiful fruit platter for Amanda. Even though it was deemed trash by one, it still had life left in it and was good for the purpose we needed it. That's how I live my life - thrifting, yard saling, looking for another's trash to be my treasure.

Friday's Fun Finds

The weather forecast for this weekend calls for an 80% chance of rain, beginning this afternoon through Sunday night. So, that meant only one thing - I had to get my yard saling done today. The Bean and I headed out and hit seven sales. We left empty handed at a few. The junk is few and far between lately. But, a treasure or two makes it worth the trip.

This was at the last sale and it was a freebie. Four old rusty metal grids. I think it was part of an old magazine rack or something. I and going to get rid of those rubber tips, hang one on the wall and attach my vintage seasonal postcards to it with binder clips. I only needed one, but since the guy told me to take them, I took all four. I think I can use them in the garden to string up green beans and clematis too.
This was my big money purchase of the day - it was only $8.00, but after a quarter here and fifty cents there, $8.00 sounds like a lot.

I love old windows. I have several in the house, a few hanging on the front porch, one on the privacy fence and a couple on the shed. I like to find unique windows and this one fit the bill. I'm not sure if I will hang it this way.

Or this way. I like the white windows the best, but I like this wooden window frame too. However, when it is turned this direction it looks a little prison bar-ish. I'm sure I will figure it out. The first thing I will do is take out the glass, which is a shame because the guy was so proud that the glass was intact.

These three old needlepoint rugs were a good find - I will be listing these. They aren't kits - no rug yarn, but just the patterns printed on canvas. There's a poppy pattern, a rose and a water wheel pattern.
A box of icicles for my Dime Store Christmas Display. It says $1.00 printed on the package, but the Tru Value tags says 29¢. There's no barcode, so I know they are pre 1972. We used tinsel when I was a kid and it would get embedded in our deep avocado green shag rug and then get wrapped around the vacuum beater bar. Ah, memories....

The Bean is an infomercial freak. He loves infomercials and commercials for all those cheesy products. When this was being advertised a year or so ago, he really, really wanted Daddy to order it for me for my birthday. Mostly because they featured a cake that looked like a watermelon complete with pink filling. I never buy those cheesy products, because I think most of them are more work than they are worth. But, we found this Perfect Cake Pan, still in it's sealed box for $2.00 today, so we will give it a try. Stay tuned for that watermelon cake!

My favorite find. Hang on, it's a cutie.
It's an old sewing box/basket. The chimney is a pin cushion and there is a pin cushion inside the lid too. It has an old JAPAN sticker on the bottom. It is truly sweet. It was $2.00 and purchased for resale, but I have fallen hard for it and will be keeping it for awhile. I do sew, and I don't have a sewing basket. So, that is how I justify that.

It even had a nice assortment of old wooden spools and a rusty pair of scissors in it. I think the scissors will be put in an artsy collage of some sort.
Lastly, maybe my best purchase money wise.

A 8 month old child mannequin. It is completely pose able and made of firmly stuffed canvas. It is a professional mannequin dated 1978. She (or he?) is perfectly clean, stuffed well and really pretty neat. I haven't looked it up yet, but I would think it would be a good seller. It was still at a one day sale at 1:00 this afternoon, so I assumed it must have been expensive. I decided to ask and the lady said, "75 cents." Well, alrighty!
I thought you might like to see what The Bean buys when we yard sale. He's a good shopper and knows a bargain.

A really cool track jacket with a tiger/bamboo theme on the side and back for $2.00.

And, for his M&M collection - three figurines and a 2000 tin for a total of $1.25. There is a green male peanut M&M which is not used anymore, so that is a good one. He has about one hundred of those toppers from every holiday - all scrounged from the depths of toy bins at yard sales. He has two entire bookshelves in his room stuffed with all sorts of M&M merchandise - pretty much all from yard sales, thrift stores and after holiday clearance sales. The game cartridge will be thrown in a bag until we get a few more, then taken to Game exchange to trade for credit so he can get a new game. This week he took a Game Cube that he got for $3.00 and some games that were 50¢ each to Game Exchange and got $19.00 credit. So, now he is hooked looking for cheap things to turn into video game $$. I think I trained him right!

  2. Great stuff! I've just recently discovered estate sales (although I've always gone to garage sales & thrift stores!). I read your blog every day & have for a while, although I'm only now posting for the 1st time . . . for a good reason! I bought a huge box of shiny brites (in the original boxes) for $5 over the weekend & I adore your wreath--how did you make it? Can you send me instructions (although I am a bit "craft challenged!").
Thanks . . . & keep up the great blogging!
