What is a monkeybox?

When I was a little girl, we had a pet monkey named Amanda. My Dad worked in the produce business, so each night he brought home that days culls in a big box - spotty cucumbers, pithy apples, limp celery, moldy oranges and the like. We called it a monkeybox. It was really just trash, but my Mom would take each piece of fruit and trim it, pare it and cut it up to make a beautiful fruit platter for Amanda. Even though it was deemed trash by one, it still had life left in it and was good for the purpose we needed it. That's how I live my life - thrifting, yard saling, looking for another's trash to be my treasure.

Thursday's Meager Yet Thrifty Finds

Today The Bean has his yearly Homeschool tests.  I dropped him off for the tests for 2.5 hours and then I went thrifting since I was in a town that I rarely frequent.  I went to three thrifts, but I only bought a few craft booklets at one and left empty handed at the other two.  Well, that isn't completely true.  At one thrift I raided the FREE bin out front and scored two vintage bowling balls and a vintage bowling ball bag.  The thrifts were all full, but not of the kind of junk I want.

I did happen onto a bunch of vintage crafting booklets from the 1960's at one thrift.  Some of the ideas are just so cute and others are just so...what the hell?
Let's start off with "Fun With Felt".  I like felt.  I like to have fun with felt.

Hmmm.  A tomato wig keeper and a coffee can curler keeper.
Uh, let's keep going, shall we?

Oh!  Ribbon straw - you know to make those fun fluffy flowers?  Those can be cute!
What's next?

Creating with....WHAT?  Corncobs?  Yes, when I think of soft cuddly toys for the youngsters in my life, I primarily envision things crafted out of corncobs.

"From dull cob to dramatic display".  Uh-huh.  Riiiiiihgt.

Clothespin dolls.  Those can be cute too.  Ladies, men, babies, farmers, yes, I can see it now.  Cute!

I like Chenille!  I like to have fun!

Uh-oh.  Seriously cute stuff.  Spun head Snowmen, ducks, turkeys a monkey and more.  C-u-t-e!

Spun head Boy Scouts!  Are you kidding me???????

Chenille Circus.  This looks like it could be a good one....
Dilly Duck.  Killing me with cuteness.

Mojo Monkey.
Yes, please!

And, lastly, my favorite.
Dream Puff Designs.
That snowman!
That stinking cute snowman!
I don't even know what Dream Puff is and I suspect they don't make it anymore.
But, if they did.
That snowman would me MINE.

  2. The Creating with Corncobs made me do a spit take. WTH??? How many cobs of corn do you have to eat to make a whole barn full of animals? Ewwww!!!!! And how sad would it be if you were the kid with the toy chest full of corncob toys. I thought I had seen it all.

  5. Looks like the chenille book is a winner, and possibly the felt one. But I hope that there is never, EVER a day where you are so bored that you make some corn cob people!

  7. I work in a used book store and we get those kinds of books all the time. Now I am going to relook at all of them. I believe at one time you could buy bags of dried corn cobs for crafting. Ok Im old!

  8. I don't think I will become a corncob crafter...I like corn on the cob alot, but I usually don't craft with my leftovers! Would love a closer look at the page under the yellow "Chenille Fun" cover....could be getting some ideas on that page!

  9. I had the most *frugal* of all frugal grannies. She could make 500 things from an old pair of pantyhose, the jelly container from Denny's, or a Wonder bread bag. I just said a small prayer of thanks that she never saw the book about corn cob toys! LOL You find the most interesting stuff!
