What is a monkeybox?

When I was a little girl, we had a pet monkey named Amanda. My Dad worked in the produce business, so each night he brought home that days culls in a big box - spotty cucumbers, pithy apples, limp celery, moldy oranges and the like. We called it a monkeybox. It was really just trash, but my Mom would take each piece of fruit and trim it, pare it and cut it up to make a beautiful fruit platter for Amanda. Even though it was deemed trash by one, it still had life left in it and was good for the purpose we needed it. That's how I live my life - thrifting, yard saling, looking for another's trash to be my treasure.

Found and Lost

It is still raining here. Nearly two weeks of non stop rain and it is getting OLD. Very, very OLD. One day it is hot - nearly 85 degrees, then it is cool and rainy. There were a lot of sales advertised for today and even more tomorrow. But, the ones scheduled for today were all cancelled and I am sure that the ones tomorrow will be too. Bummer.

There was a brief lull in the rain, so we drove up to the highway to watch a bicycle race. It isn't something that takes long to see. You can see it coming and zip - they are gone. But, still fun too see several hundred bicycles sail past as one. It was very early in the race so they were all still in unison. There were riders from all over the world in the race - several waved at us and said, "Ola!" Now, there's something you don't hear around here very often!

I did find one yard sale yesterday on the way to the park. The one sunny nice day we had seen in for-evah. The bean spotted this funny Cookie jar for 50¢ and snatched it up. He loves pigs. I don't now why. But, he has a collection of pigs. Lots of them. I think buying a cookie jar is better than all that little plastic crap he used to buy when he was little. I've trained him right.
I found this cute little Santa matchbox for 10¢, a set of silverplate tongs for $1.00 and the little child's apron for 10¢.
And a big Ziploc bag full of old cookie cutters for 50¢. I think I already had all of these, but I keep them in a massive jar and I still had some room, so home they came with me. I'd have been crazy to have left them for that amount, right?

When we got to the sale, we were the only ones there. At the end of the driveway I found a huge old seagrass basket with a lid on it for $3.00. I thought I would take a quick look around then I would grab it. I went into the garage to look when a truck rolled up and a lady literally jumped out and grabbed that basket. Darn it! The worst part is - I knew her! I learned a lesson - always pick it up if you even think you might want it. Actually, I usually always do that - but no one else was there so I left it. Oh, well.
We went out to check on the bunnies tonight and they were gone. Mama must have moved them. They were not well protected from the rain, so I am hoping she moved them and nothing happened to them. Mama is still in the backyard, so I think she might have moved them to under the shed where she lives. That would make more sense. I'll be looking for them, because I was really looking forward to watching them hop around.

Happy Junkin' this weekend.

Neat! We have that same set of cookie cutters (minus the bird and bunny) - they belonged to my grandmother; I'm guessing they're from the 40's.

(I just found your blog via Google; I love reading about your finds)

  5. I have the cookie cutters, most of them were my mother's but I have found a few here and there. I'm still looking for a few, I have a decorating idea for my kitchen that I'd like to use them in. I also have one of the Santa match boxes, I think we got it in an auction box many years ago but I'm not sure. It is something that I don't think I'll ever part with, it's just too cute!

  6. I just got two of those matchboxes at an estate sale a few weeks ago. I think I also paid less than a dollar. They say "Japan" on them and 1966, plus have a white pompon on the top. So cute!
