What is a monkeybox?

When I was a little girl, we had a pet monkey named Amanda. My Dad worked in the produce business, so each night he brought home that days culls in a big box - spotty cucumbers, pithy apples, limp celery, moldy oranges and the like. We called it a monkeybox. It was really just trash, but my Mom would take each piece of fruit and trim it, pare it and cut it up to make a beautiful fruit platter for Amanda. Even though it was deemed trash by one, it still had life left in it and was good for the purpose we needed it. That's how I live my life - thrifting, yard saling, looking for another's trash to be my treasure.

Stay Home or Thrift? That is the Question.

The Weatherman says a foot of snow is coming. Most people run to the store for bread and milk. Not me. "To the thrift!" I say!

The Bean and I went to the Super Cheap Thrift Store and then out to the Grace Place. I had accidentally stumbled onto The Grace Place last month when they were having their $2.00 Bag Sale Day. I marked the first Thursday of the month as a regular trip after I found seven vintage tablecloths on that fateful day and managed to get them all in one $2.00 bag. I had my suspicions that I couldn't possibly repeat that every bag sale day, and I was right. No vintage tablecloths today. Not much vintage anything. Also, there were signs up today saying Bag Sale Day was for clothes only and I don't really but many clothes at the thrift. So, we won't be rushing out there in April, that's for sure. The lady apologized that my pruchases didn't apply for the $2.00 bag sale and then she added my total up. Gues how much? $2.00. Ha!

I don't believe I mentioned that I went to my beloved Super Cheap Thrift last week and they had received a donation of eggs from the University Farms. They had flats of 30 eggs for $1.00. Me, being a relative non-egg eater, but a severe bargain hunter, bought one flat. I do eat eggs in baked goods and an occassional omelet, but other than that I really never eat eggs. We did have an omelet last night and I must say, it was very, very good. Something about farm fresh eggs, I suppose. And, we made Chocolate Chip Walnut Oatmeal Cookies that are to die for. Honestly.
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm....Cookies.

Oh yes, thrifting. That is the subject of the day.

I found this piece of stained glass for 25¢, but it had the unicorn on it. I detest unicorn stuff. I didn't like it in the 1980's and I don't like it now. (Forgive me if you are into unicorns. And don't read the rest of this paragraph). The unicorn was some sort of a rub on transfer and it was scratchy looking, so I thought I could remove it at home.

And, so I did. A little spray of bleach cleaner and some elbow grease and no more unicorn! Now, what to do with it is another story. It's about as a dinner plate and looks like the sun, so I will have to find a good use for it. I may just put it in the flower garden this summer.
These earrings are marked W. Germany and were 50¢ at the S.C. Thrift. (I dig my new camera for this little stuff). They will most likely be added to some artwork or a swap in the future. Such a pretty blue.
This wooden box is for coupons, but I will use it to hold receipts or Boxtops for Education or some other little thing I am always tucking away. We have a bit of a thing for pickles in my family, so this was a no brainer at 25¢.
Okay, so I really am not sure why I bought this bridal bouquet. It is ugly/pretty. It is very springy and happy, but really not my choice of colors, not to mention that I really don't "do" flowers. But, it has a ton of roses on it and lots of ribbon and surely I could dismantle it and use it for parts in other things. I don't know. It was only 75¢, so I thought "Why not". I have a whole house full of "Why Nots". The funniest part is that The Bean insists on carrying my purchases me no matter what I buy. This bouquet wouldn't fit in a bag, so he carried it a la Bride style and got some funny looks from a couple of burly dirty truck driving guys.

I am still amazed that I continue to find Matte White Pottery at my thrifts. And at affordable prices. This one was 45¢. I am almost embarrassed to admit that it only cost 45¢. Every decorating magazine I get in the mail had double page spreads of gorgeous homes and nearly all of them have full on collections or at least a shelf full of Matte White Pottery. And when I read that the owners "have been fortunate to buy their pottery for $50-$100.00 each, I am really embarrassed. For them! My most expensive piece cost $2.00, then the next one was $1.00, but all the rest (over 50) cost less than $1.00 each. This is a nice tall one and is McCoy.
A fun vintage beaded purse for 50¢. It is really like two purses side by side. It was cute and sunny and bright, so I grabbed it.
I know this is a lemon, but it found a new home with my Watermelon Potholders. I have a lime, a canteloupe and a few other fruit slice potholders. I really shouldn't add to the collection as it is a bit out of hand, but it was only 25¢. (And, I got a nice big old basket for them last week for 50¢!)

So, Old man Winter, bring on the snow, I don't care. I went thrifting and all is right in the world right now. For a day or so anyway.

  1. I saw your cookie pic and my tummy growled. Yummo.

I actually love the roses and would be dismanteling them also. I put them in my silver pitchers and want to do more with my teacups and roses.

I NEVER see matte white at my thrifts. Hoping when I venture up to see Sue that her thrifts will smile on me.

It was near 80 yesterday and dropped to the high 30's by this afternoon, with rain and wind. ME NO LIKEY!!!!!! We had SNOW last April, so the crazy TX weather is far from over.

  4. Forgot to tell you, you might want to check on those earrings. Some of the stuff marked W.Germany goes for $$$$$$. The piece I have that is my friends is NOT worth much, but YOU seem to have the touch in picking out winners.

  7. You made a good decision to go out despite the weather report! Love the pottery you found.

You could probably use the dismantled flowers on some Easter baskets as decorations.

Love all your treasures--you are so good a spotting the best deals!
