What is a monkeybox?

When I was a little girl, we had a pet monkey named Amanda. My Dad worked in the produce business, so each night he brought home that days culls in a big box - spotty cucumbers, pithy apples, limp celery, moldy oranges and the like. We called it a monkeybox. It was really just trash, but my Mom would take each piece of fruit and trim it, pare it and cut it up to make a beautiful fruit platter for Amanda. Even though it was deemed trash by one, it still had life left in it and was good for the purpose we needed it. That's how I live my life - thrifting, yard saling, looking for another's trash to be my treasure.

Pinch ME! No, Wait - Don't!

It's St. Patrick's Day.  That is the one holiday that I don't usually do anything for - no baking, no celebrating, no decorating.  I do wear a touch of green to ward off those pesky "Where's your green?" pincher people. Oowie.

But, last year I happened upon a yard sale with boxes from "Grandma's Attic" and I found my first St. Patrick's Day decorations.  So, I pulled it out this year and gathered up whatever green things I could find and built myself a wee little display.

I literally looked for anything green and threw it up on the cabinet.

I bought that ladder not long ago and it was in the "to be painted" pile, but green was just the right color for today.  I bought a bunch of old Dennison seal books a few years ago, but I never realized I had a St. Patrick's Day one.  A horse ribbon is mandatory in the decorating department, I am told.

I bought the gold tree after Christmas for 90% off  I figured if I could get it that cheap (89¢), why not?  Gold is so not my thing.  I borrowed our green Mardi Gras Beads that we got at the parade and threw them up there willy nilly.

Every body uses an old truck in their decor, so why be different?  But, who else adds a giant button and some tiny toadstools than me?

Spotted these two dolls in my very own booth last week, so I brought them back home.
Shopping at it's cheapest.

There were three funny leprechauns in the bag of things I bought.

This one is my favorite.  Maybe he will take a spin in the old VW in the background.

Ever the faithful fan of my letter cards - I added NO PINCHING to an old green chalkboard.

A little bit of fun in this time of not much going on the way in decorating.  I'm anxious to see my Easter things since I wasn't able to decorate last year.  I won't get it out for a couple more weeks though.  But, I can't wait.  Vintage bunnies and chickies OH MY!

  1. With how wild I tend to get with Christmas and then Valentines Day, I take a break and don't decorate for St. Patrick's Day. But Easter?! I literally laid in bed last night trying to figure out where I was going to put everything. I can't wait!

  5. I don't decorate for St. Patrick's Day either. A few years ago I did buy a cute wood shamrock at Target and I put that out with the two or three antique SPD postcards and called it good. Now I can't even be bothered to do that, LOL. Porter finally knows that it is SPD this year and he's all excited, except he keeps asking me, "What do we DO on St. Patrick's Day?" He can't figure it out because we don't get presents, we don't have a party, so what the heck is this holiday all about? I told him some people celebrate by drinking green beer. "Beer, what's that?" Funny kid. ;)

  7. The green truck with the mushrooms is PERFECT and I think I like it better than the red ones with the Christmas trees. I predict a new trend in blogland!

  9. Your green display is so cute, it certainly doesn't look like you just "threw it up!" ;)
