What is a monkeybox?

When I was a little girl, we had a pet monkey named Amanda. My Dad worked in the produce business, so each night he brought home that days culls in a big box - spotty cucumbers, pithy apples, limp celery, moldy oranges and the like. We called it a monkeybox. It was really just trash, but my Mom would take each piece of fruit and trim it, pare it and cut it up to make a beautiful fruit platter for Amanda. Even though it was deemed trash by one, it still had life left in it and was good for the purpose we needed it. That's how I live my life - thrifting, yard saling, looking for another's trash to be my treasure.

More Junk & Bargain Prices Too

Boy, have I bought the junk this week!  And the week isn't over yet - there is a  big Boy Scout Rummage sale to hit in the morning.  I love Fall and the abundance of Yard, Garage and Rummage Sales.  The weather is beautiful and there are sales everywhere, so I am just enjoying it and letting my responsibilities slide for a few days.  Stay at Home Mom's need a couple vacation days too, right?

At the first sale today, I saw a Wal-Mart bag tied shut and the curiosity got the best of me, so I had to untie it and and have a look inside.  I was surprised to find these nice big chunks of slag glass in all these pretty colors.

It reminded me of that gorgeous glass wall at the bluebird place, so I had to get it.  The magic price of one dollar made it even a better score.  Now, I just need about twenty thousand more pieces to make myself a wall o' glass.  That'll happen, right?

At that same sale, I got this interesting wreath made of Barbed Wire.  I plan to junk it up with some stuff - old sign letters, scrabble tiles, bingo markers - just a lot of random junk.

I also got this old window, which I need like a hole in the head since I have about twenty old windows stockpiled in the shed.  But, I liked the lines of this one and think I will add rows of nails to in and hang my jewelry on it.  (Forgive the dirty house, power washing was not on my to-do list this summer.  But, it is this Fall, I promise!)
The rest of the day brought a few fun things my way.  A cool old dustpan to become a noteholder of some sort, a small yellow pottery pitcher and three old metal ice trays.

I was excited to see this nice tall thermos sitting on the table at the American Legion sale.  Nothing was priced, so I asked how much....after some thought, it was decided $2.00.  Which was fine by me it will go nicely with my collection.  When I went to pay, they looked at the Thermos carefully and announced, "Oh, wait...this Thermos is really old."  Oh, okay, now the price is going to go up, I thought.  The looked at it for the longest time and then said - "How about just a dollar then?"  OH!  OLD means old and yuck to them.  Yeesssss.  Then, just as I was handing her the money, she took the cup off the top of the Thermos and said, "OH!  The stopper is missing too.  How about 75¢?"  I think if I could have shown her the small scratch on the bottom, she might have paid me to take it off her hands! :)
I love this thing - this is an old handmade Woodpecker Door Knocker.  Pull the string and it pecks away at the board.  Love it.  I'm going to hang it in the hallway and pull on it for my own amusement.

I really don't know what these are - someone cut up an old quilt and made different shapes.  There are eight in all and each one if big enough to use as a placemat.  There are some great old floursack prints on them though.  They were on the 50¢ each table, but the lady told me she could "let me have them" for $5.00 (Math was not her forte'), but I said okay.  Before I went up to pay, she went in to eat and had her husband come out and take the money.  When I told him that his wife said they were five dollars, he replied "Oh, she's f*ing crazy - gimme $2.50 for all of it." (including the woodpecker and a few other things).  I got the heck out of Dodge before the Missus came back and realized what he had done!

More junk tomorrow after the Boy Scout sale!  Hope you are finding loot this weekend too!

  1. Shara,
I have an idea for that wreath! Would those chuncks of glass fit inside the wreath? It kind of reminded me of the metal in the bluebird wall! I think of you everytime I see a Thermos! I didn't know if you were still picking them up! I will have to remember that you are!!!! I love the story of the husband! LOL I always try to figure out who is the better bargain person and wait for that one to be free for the questions. Great junking!!!

  4. I think you should start on your glass wall by putting the chunks into a clear glass jar and setting it on a windowsill. Then when/if you ever find more, you can grow your wall.

And knowing you, Shara, I have no doubt that you will indeed find more of those cool. cool glass pieces.
