What is a monkeybox?

When I was a little girl, we had a pet monkey named Amanda. My Dad worked in the produce business, so each night he brought home that days culls in a big box - spotty cucumbers, pithy apples, limp celery, moldy oranges and the like. We called it a monkeybox. It was really just trash, but my Mom would take each piece of fruit and trim it, pare it and cut it up to make a beautiful fruit platter for Amanda. Even though it was deemed trash by one, it still had life left in it and was good for the purpose we needed it. That's how I live my life - thrifting, yard saling, looking for another's trash to be my treasure.

Going to the Movies

Tonight The Bean and I are going to the movies.  We are going to go see an Advance Screening of the Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows.  I won two free passes through the local CW station.   And I am super excited to see this movie.
I know that I won't buy popcorn, even though it smells dee-vine because it is just too darn expensive. Target is right next door and you can get a sack of popcorn for $1.00 there.  The same size sack is $6.50 at the theater.  Crazy!  I will have Jujy Fruits - my movie snack of choice.  I will sneak the Jujy Fruits in my purse after I purchase at the Dollar Tree. 'Cause that's how I roll.  I am cheap.  What can I say?

This will be the first movie that The Bean has gone to at night.  He is 15 years old.  How sad is that?  We like Matinees, we like no crowds, we like Matinee pricing.  But, FREE is waaaaay better than matinee pricing!

I'll be back tomorrow to tell you all about the movie, how it ended and who dies.  Ha.  Just kidding.
*You sneak in candy too, don't you?

  1. Yes I sneak in candy too and pop and chocolate and water.

If I go at night and didn't have supper in sneak in sandwiches!

I'm cheap too. I exchange my reward points for movie passes.

  2. So jealous. Yup, so very jealous. Hope it's great. My husband always gets to take my son to those first. I have to stay home with the young one and WAIT for video. Ugh. Oh, and I totally buy my candy at Big Lots before we go in. Isn't that why we have purses?!

  3. Welllllll, since the only time I go to the movies is when it is free, I usually let Jack pick out a concession to buy. (I mean, they already let us in for free, and they have to pay the staff.)

I read some kind of trade article about movie theaters once. It explained how the whole thing works - the way the theaters get the movie (how much they have to pay), etc. The jist of it was that concessions are the ONLY money maker. (In fact, if a theater has paid $100,000 for a movie and they only earn $75,000 in ticket sales they actually lose that $25,000.) It was interesting. Too bad I dont have a link to it!

  5. No, I don't sneak stuff in to the theater. But we don't buy popcorn, etc. very often. For certain movies, we will. And this one is one of those. But we aren't going to get to see it for several days, we usually are in the theater the first Sunday one of the HP movies is out, but we are just impossibly busy this time. I'm jealous!

it's so expensive to see a movie nowadays.

    ::::sigh::::

When I went to movies with the now teen, we'd always go to the last movie before 6pm because that was the bargain matinee. He and his girlfriend go to that one, usually, unless I have free tickets...lol...

I'd bring along bottles of pop, but we ALWAYS have to buy POPCORN!!

Always buy the HUGE bag to share, lots of butter and then a FREE refill before we leave!

He still brings me popcorn after a movie...lol...

Of course we sneak candy in. Even when my daughter worked at a theater in high school and we got in free.
The most outrageous thing I ever smuggled into a movie was, along with two of my cousins, we each smuggled in a portion of strawberry shortcake and put it together in the theater. Movies in style!!!

  8. I didn't used to sneak stuff in until the price of tickets went up to $10+ each. Now I don't feel the least bit guilty bringing in my own goodies. Why get ripped off twice in one night!
