What is a monkeybox?

When I was a little girl, we had a pet monkey named Amanda. My Dad worked in the produce business, so each night he brought home that days culls in a big box - spotty cucumbers, pithy apples, limp celery, moldy oranges and the like. We called it a monkeybox. It was really just trash, but my Mom would take each piece of fruit and trim it, pare it and cut it up to make a beautiful fruit platter for Amanda. Even though it was deemed trash by one, it still had life left in it and was good for the purpose we needed it. That's how I live my life - thrifting, yard saling, looking for another's trash to be my treasure.

Going Solo

Today I did something that I haven't done in nearly two years. I went somewhere alone. The Breadman is the kind of guy that says, "I'll go too" no matter where I am going or what I am doing.
The photos have nothing to do with the post....I'm amazed that my
Christmas Poinsettia is still alive. It raly make a petty green plant.
I can say, "I'm going to run down to Tampons R'Us and buy a truckload of super absorbent tampons." He will say, "I'll go too." He always goes with me. And, since The Bean is here all the time being homeschooled and such, he always goes with me too. I've told him that he can stay home, but he always wants to go with me. So, I am never alone. Ever. (Except for those two nights in the hospital, but I wouldn't really consider that special treat.)
My Hydrangea snapped back after the ice storm and is full of beautiful blooms.
The plan for today was to go see Transformers. It was The Breadman's day off and he and The Bean have been anxiously awaiting the latest Transformer movie. I wish I could say the same. I so do not like Transformers. I just don't "get it". It doesn't make sense and I really don't even want it to make sense. And, it gives me a big old screaming headache to boot. At least when it's on a DVD, I can do some crafting, read a magazine or take a snooze. Zzzzzz.

The Gladiolas are up and blooming. I cut these and bring them in because where I chose to plant them - you cannot see them from inside the house or from the street. Good planning right? Doh!

So, I suggested to the boys that they go see Transformers and give Mom a chance to do some "girly" things on her own. (And, by girly things, I mean go thrifting and peruse Hobby Lobby at my leisure.) And, by jove, they agreed!

The birdhouse gourds are starting to bloom. I've never grown these before - I hope they turn out! I'm training them to take over the old grocery cart.

So, I dropped them off at the theater and went on my merry way. I even got to listen to my music on my radio station. Yea, baby! I went to two thrift stores, Hobby Lobby and Target. I bought few things, but nothing stellar. But, by golly, I went out all by myself. Just like a big girl!

What? You don't have a wheelbarrow full of bowling balls in your yard?
Hmmmmm.

Maybe in a couple of years, I will do it again!

  1. No Shara, you CANNOT wheel your bowling balls down the lane in a wheelbarrow at the bowling alley!!!

Ds never wants to go with me shopping, so I am frequently solo. Sometimes I enjoy the solitude, sometimes(like today-email),I enjoy the company. Glad you enjoyed your solitude today.

  6. I was watching the Duggars a few nights ago and they went to a thrift store and I thought of you! I know you live somewhat near them. I was more excited to see where you may or may not shop than I was about the Duggars. Love your Blog!

  7. I don't often get to go anywhere on my own anymore either. My hubby is a "I'll go with you" guy to the core. Of course I've gotten so used to it that I hate going anywhere by myself and as long as the weather premits, I'll take my dog so I'm not techicly alone!

  8. Shara, someone in my neighborhood made a really cool looking bowling ball fence using different colored balls - i have a pic on my blog (may 2008) if you want to see it. You will need more balls (will give you something to look for when 'saling)
