What is a monkeybox?

When I was a little girl, we had a pet monkey named Amanda. My Dad worked in the produce business, so each night he brought home that days culls in a big box - spotty cucumbers, pithy apples, limp celery, moldy oranges and the like. We called it a monkeybox. It was really just trash, but my Mom would take each piece of fruit and trim it, pare it and cut it up to make a beautiful fruit platter for Amanda. Even though it was deemed trash by one, it still had life left in it and was good for the purpose we needed it. That's how I live my life - thrifting, yard saling, looking for another's trash to be my treasure.

I'm posting this on a brand new computer. I've lost all my bookmarks and favorites - I have them all written down, but eh gads, the thought of typing them all in and finding them all is a bit daunting. I think I had over 150 blogs in my favorites. I do not do Blogrolling or whatever it is called, but I am thinking it might be a good idea. I did go to a few of my favorite blogs that I have a lot in common with and go to their favorites and copy a bunch of them. That was a good idea on my part. Others I will come across eventually and some won't make the cut. I had some that hadn't posted in over a year. I do wonder wht ever happened to those people. Did they just post one day and never again, or did something happen to them. It's a funny thing this blogland. If we disappear, people will notice, but how do you find out what happened?
My screensaver is gone - the one with The Bean as the Hulk and the cats as kittens and all those othe sweet photos I was used to seeing everyday. Now i just have that VISTA thing swirling around. Oh, I just hate change. I'll get it all back to where I wnat it, but until then I plan on bitching about it a lot. (I will say this is one snazzy computer and it has all the bells and whistles and things I never knew existed. And, boy oh boy, do things look different with this widescreen monitor. Boy howdy! I don't even like the look of my own blog now.)
I haven't a clue how to connect my camera to this new fancy dancy high tech computer, but it will come to me. Next I am going to try to hook up the Wi-Fi, which I failed at miserably on the old computer. We have a laptop and The Bean and I could both benefit from wi-fi for homeschooling and general Internet surfing. I'm not completely inept at technology. But, sometimes the terms confuse me and I get in deeper than I wanted to and then I just say an expletive or two and fuggetaboutit.
Another thing I did this week that is way out of my realm is set up a Facebook Account. I don't know why, I don't understand it. I don't really understand the purpose of it. I do think it would be cool to have someone from your past find you and say, "Oh, I used to be in love with you" or "Hey, I wanted to leave my Estate to you because you were nice to me in Junior High." I forgot to add my maiden name, so I don't think too many people from my way back past will be finding me anyway My cousin found me (Hey, Tracy), but she already knew where I was in the first place. So, if anyone can tell me a really good logical reason for my facebook account, that would be dandy.
So, I leave you with a photoless post, which I hate. Bah mumbug. It will get better, I promise.

  1. I'm in the process of changing over all my favorite blogs to Blogroll also. It is a pain. I got 99 listed and it's not letting me add any more. Don't know why. I did get to weed out the ones that are no longer around though. I like it because it saves so much time when you can just look over to see if your favorites have added anything new. You don't have to click on the blog if there isn't anything for you to read.

I hate change too. I have a new camera that I need to read up on and see how I can down load my pictures to the computer as it's different then the one I use. My "new" camera is already a year old!!! LOL

I think facebook is more for the young kids to stay in touch like My Space is. Well anyone can stay in touch but it's mostly the younger group that does. I just signed up for Twitter and that is really a joke as far as I'm concerned! I don't get that at all! But then again, I'm an old lady. LOL

    Hugs,

  2. I HAD to post to make sure you still had me!!! Aren't computers Wonderful? Aren't computers a p.i.t.A.?! Some times it takes things like this to get us to purge a little dead wood! I have a facebook in my maiden name, so if you get a request to 'be-friend' an unknown SMITH... it's just me!

  4. Bummer about the computer. Good luck recovering all your lost blog favs. I don't type so well (I never did learn when I took it in HS!) so it would take me forever to type in all my favs!

  5. A note on facebook: it can be fun. I am 36 and have reconnected with a ton of people from high school, as well as from my high school job. Also I have made a couple of re-connections that might lead to a job change for my husband down the road---turns out that one of my friends from academic quiz bowl (yeah I was a geek) works for a computer library that is on my hubby's dream-job list. So I forwarded that friend some basic info about husbands skills and that, and the friend said if anything opens up along those lines he will email me. That's the good side.

The down side is I only wanted to reconnect with about 10% of those people from my past, and now they are ALL sending me notes all the time! I also use it to post links to my real blog so my old friends can see what I am up too, but again, that is a dicey move. It can also be a humongous time waster.

  6. Why is change so hard for us? Especially when it comes to computers! DH keeps threatening to wipe everything off my computer and start over, because it has an occasional hiccup. I keep telling him to leave it alone or I will hurt him. :)

  7. First and foremost, you REALLY REALLY need a bloglines or google reader account. It makes it much faster and much easier to read blogs. No more checking to find your favorites haven't been updated in months, it notifies you every time there is a new post. Plus, you can read them all in one place. Yes, it is a little different at first since everything is on a white background, but it really makes me able to read a lot of blogs that I would NOT have time to do otherwise.

Second, facebook is fun! Friends from high school, my former students, relatives that live far and away, other bloggers, we all keep in touch on facebook. It's a real blast from the past sometimes, and I like being able to actually "chat" realtime with my girlfriends and other bloggers, etc. Once you get the hang of it you will enjoy it.

  8. Yea on the new computer, but it is a chore, isn't it? I always wonder what happens to some of my favorites too.

I love facebook. I have gotten in touch with so many people--high school friends, friends from when I sold SU! It is fun!

    Have a good day!

  9. Don't worry Shara, it will get better. Sometimes change helps us find our new favorites. Hang in there. I stopped blogging for awhile and then found facebook. Once I started that I realized how much I wanted to blog again. I went and spruced up my blog and now I am loving it. We will come read you no matter what your blog looks like (as long as it isn't scary, or has clowns, they scare me!).

  10. I love Google Reader. I read you all the time on Google Reader! And only come on your site when I really have to leave a comment. But it does make it easier to keep up.

And Facebook. You know, you can chat on Facebook. Which is nice, if say, your only real mom friend went back to work last week and you're lost without her. I think I feel a blog post coming on!

I still haven't figured out bloglines. I signed up for facebook in my married name, but somehow people from long ago found me. I'm not sure how. I did find out today (through facebook) that one of my former college housemates is now in federal prison for eco-terrorism. He always did give me the creeps... So I am a fan of facebook, even though I am more of a lurker than a participant.
