What is a monkeybox?

When I was a little girl, we had a pet monkey named Amanda. My Dad worked in the produce business, so each night he brought home that days culls in a big box - spotty cucumbers, pithy apples, limp celery, moldy oranges and the like. We called it a monkeybox. It was really just trash, but my Mom would take each piece of fruit and trim it, pare it and cut it up to make a beautiful fruit platter for Amanda. Even though it was deemed trash by one, it still had life left in it and was good for the purpose we needed it. That's how I live my life - thrifting, yard saling, looking for another's trash to be my treasure.

Thursday's Thrifty Finds

Today was a very cold day. We seem to be having an unusually harsh winter so far here in Arkansas. It was only in the low 30's all day with wind chills much lower than 30. A perfect day to be snuggled in at home. Or was it????

See, I heard the thrift calling to me. Honestly. It was the furthest thing from my mind, but suddenly I knew I had to go. So, I did. I wasn't int he door five minutes before I knew why I had to go rightnow.

No, it wasn't another dip into the 5¢ ornament bin. Although these little baubles made me happy too. The unique Shiny Brite box was a nice 25¢ score too.

It wasn't a this vintage Christmas tablecloth either. Although, for $1.00, it was a nice find.

And, as you can clearly see, I really needed another Christmas tablecloth!

No, it was this 5¢ find that made me giddy.

A 1961 Annalee Angel tree topper. Now, I now some people don't like Annalee dolls. Some people even hate Annalee dolls. But, I just love them. Their little hand painted faces are so comical. So, to find one for a mere nickel was, well, priceless.
Has the thrift ever called to you? And did you know why when you got there?

  1. I just can't get over how every time you go to the thrift store you come home with wonderful things. I am so jealous of those vintage table cloths and the shinny brights you find. I would love to do a wreath like you did but I don't have anywhere near enough. You lucky girl!

Hey, I have a question for you. What did you make that darling cone out of that you sent me? Would you do a post about how to make one? I know I can not be the only one who would love to know.

    Hugs,
    Joanne

  3. I wish the thrift were calling me instead of the dishes. LOL

It's been cold here too. With snow twice already and snow 3 more times in the 7 day forecast. Snow before Jan 1 is really unheard of here. But then again, we had the MOST mild summer I can ever remember this year. Wasn't even hot really...
