Weekend Finds - Late!

It's Tuesday night and I haven't even blogged about my weekend finds. Bad Shara.

I went yard saling with my Dad on Friday. He likes to go to yard sales, but he can walk around a Church sale in three minutes and be ready to go..empty handed! Yikes. Not me. I have to look at everything. Every. Thing. You just don't know what you are missing under this under that. You have to dig!

We went to one Church Sale and an Estate Sale. The Church Sale was super cheap - 5¢ to 50¢ on most of what I bought.

A pink tablecloth with roses - it has matching napkins and a table runner too - 50¢ for all.

A kitchy 1970's floral terry cloth tablecloth for 50¢. Not my usual kind of tablecloth - but I thought it would be good for a picnic.
Two old metal receipt holders from the Estate sale. They were $3.00 each. But, when I checked out, I got a better deal on everything than it was marked.

This very old sign from an old meat market caught my eye. I just loved the patina on the sign. It was at the Estate Sale.
This tiny little smock was under some junk at the Church Sale. See, I told you, you have to dig. It was 10¢.
I was a bit too excited when I moved a pile of polyester pantsuits and discovered a baggie full of vintage crafting supplies. I have been looking for some of the old soft pipe cleaners forever. The sequins and beads were all in old prescription bottles from the 1960's. I love how old ladies always recycled their bottles and jars.
Five boxes of worry dolls from Guatemala for 25¢ each (I love worry dolls), a fun Scrabble game called Bali (which I only wanted for those cool letter cards), an old snowman candle with googley eyes, a replica of Bill Clinton's Childhood home in Hope, AR, and a sweet little girl holding a big flower - all from the Church sale. In the back is a box of Jarts. Jarts are considered weapons and you cannot resell them on ebay. We happen to love playing Jarts. We have one set, but needed another for all three of us to be able to play. They weren't priced and I told The Bean I would go as high as $10.00 for them since they are hard to find and we wanted them so much. When I paid, I had $9.50 worth of things. I asked how much the Jarts were and he said to make it an even $10.00 for it all. So, I only paid 50¢ for the Jarts or the rest of my stuff was free, depending on how you look at it. (I like the FREE version myself).
This 1912 calendar plate from a local Jeweler's was only 50¢ at the Church Sale. I can't believe what good condition it is in considering it is nearly 100 years old.
A couple vintage Christmas items 10¢ each, a HUGE roll of tickets for $3.00, a sweet rose print for 50¢, a looooong string of glass beads for 50¢ and a wooden bank from O-Hare Airport for 50¢. The little bottle is one of those prescription bottles. It is from 1966 and is for "nerves" and "take as needed". Ahhh, simpler times.

Saturday I went back to the Church Sale just to see if I missed anything. When I walked in, they handed me a huge paper grocery bag with handles and told me to fill it with anything for....$1.00. Well, I went a little crazy. I filled up five bags with stuff. I'm still sorting it all out. Much of it I will re-donate to one of my thrifts. I figured, if one thing in each bag was worth the dollar, the rest was gravy. I told The Bean if it looked new or really old to put it in the bag. We ended up with a lot of holiday items, glassware, dishes, craft items and books plus a lot more. I got a really nice set of dessert dishes with berries on them that I am researching. I must say, it was pretty fun packing those bags. At one point I was digging in a cardboard flat of jewelry looking to see if anything looked good when it occurred to me to just dump the whole darn thing in my bag and keep on moving. I saw a stack of old 45 records and rather than looking through them for an old Beatles record (I wish), I just took them all. I never even looked at the clothes. I forgot! Doh!

P.S. Thanks for the Anniversary wishes. I don't see how I could be married 18 years when I am only 27 years old.....;o)

  2. I love church sales and I love what I always call "Old Lady Bags" from the thrift store, where they bag up random craft and sewing things and sell them for 90 cents a bag. God Bless Little Old Ladies! I hope when I'm gone someone deserving inherits all the little treasures from my craft baskets that I'm sure my sons won't care to keep, lol.

  3. I'm also one of those people who has to look at EVERYTHING! It's usually better if I just go by myself. I've wanted one of those receipt holders, but I'm afraid one of us will impale themselves on it, so I pass them by! I'm strangely attracted to that terry tablecloth--I've never seen one of those before. You got alot of great stuff!

  8. You are the Queen of the good deal. Your state must be ripe with good finds. I am a librarian in Indiana and my finds are good but not as great as yours. I bow down to your ability to find a treasure trove!

  9. My grandparents had Jarts when I was little and I LOVED that game!!! Looking back on how that game was made I would probably never let my 9 year old play now. But I have so many good memories of playing with my grandfather in the backyard with those. Wish I still had theirs. Happy Junkin :)
